Maya Island Air Regional Initiates Flights to Honduras

Almost one month after it inaugurated daily flights to Cancun and Guatemala City, Maya Island Air Regional will begin flying to San Pedro Sula in Honduras on Saturday. The daily flight to Honduras was part of the original plan, but it was delayed because of the civil unrest. Maya Island Air Regional's CEO Louis Zabaneh says conditions are now stable enough for them to begin flying to San Pedro Sula.
Dr. Louis Zabaneh, CEO - Maya Island Air Regional
"Unfortunately, because of the political situation and uncertainties there we decided to wait a few weeks to see how things were going to turn out. We have now gained a level of comfort that we feel that there will be secure setting at the airport, we've been working closely with the tour operators, with the travel agents, and everybody has now concurred that the situation is appropriate for us to start that flight from San Pedro Sula."

Keith Swift,
"Why San Pedro Sula?"

Dr. Louis Zabaneh,
"Well, we've been flying to San Pedro Sula since August of 2006 and so we have a good relationship already with the city, moving people through Savannah, and it is in fact the commercial center of Honduras, almost similar to having Belize City and Belmopan, where Tegucigalpa is the political capital of Honduras. So it is indeed an appropriate place for us to launch from."

Saturday's flight will be the inaugural flight, but thereafter there will be a flight that departs San Pedro Sula at 9 a.m. and arrive in Belize at 10 am. The return flight leaves Belize at 3 p.m. and lands in San Pedro Sula at 4. The prices are US$299 for the round trip from Belize to San Pedro Sula, and US$460 for the round trip from either Guatemala City or Cancun to San Pedro Sula.

And then what flight does one take to get to Roatan? Because the flight arrives so late in SPS, one would have to stay overnight before catching a flight to Roatan.

I'm thinking it still looks equivalent to the way I've done it before, which is flying back through Houston on Continental. A bit of a pain and requires an overnight but still accumulates OnePass miles.

Perhaps this Maya flight is a better option for those already situated in Belize vs those of us that have to get to Belize in the first place anyway.
