i am moving to caye caulker in october and plan on staying for the winter. i have friends that own a cafe on the island but i am expecting not to really be able to work as they say most of their jobs have to go to the locals. my question is, what is the cost of living? i was expecting to pay around 300 a month for rent and was wondering if that was enough to get a place. also, what does it cost to keep yourself fed on the island. thanks!

Hi Jason,

As you are arriving in October, you should be able to get a pretty good deal on your rental. For US 300 you should expect a very small cabin...or even a guest room at one of the older hotels. You will not be beachfront or have A/C for that type of rent.

Eating on Caulker does vary cost wise...

You can buy tacos from a street vendor for a few dollars...the chinese restaurants sell friend chicken for US 2.50. Most take out restaurants are under US 8.00 for a meal...Joe Habaneros has a US$ 5.00 section of their menu....a pizza there is around US$ 10.

A beer at most bars is US $ 2.50. Rum and Vodka drinks at Joe Habaneros are US$ 2.00.

Other than that...a 5 gallon water is US$ 2.50.... 4 rolls of toilet paper are US$ 1.50....a bag of potato chips is US$4.00 (imported)

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Wendy
