Does anyone know how the South Beach project is progressing? Have heard good and bad about it. Just wondering if it is a go yet, and if not, why not.
Thanks all, for any input.

The more important question is If it's a go, in God's name WHY?

Why would this project get a permit from any government or department with responsibilities related to the Environment, Tourism, Fisheries, Planning, Archaeology or Mangrove Protection? Even those with responsibilities related to Taxation and Employment need to look down the road just a little -- it's hard to imagine that this project will generate more taxes or create more employment than it will cost long term. Paradise will not generate taxes or jobs when it has been completely paved over.

Why would anyone with an investment on Ambergris Caye support South Beach (unless said investment is already for sale)? The economy of a mature market is not well served by cannibalizing existing businesses or killing the goose that even now occasionally lays a golden egg. (But don’t look back 5, 10, 20 or more years ago, or the glow of the golden eggs will blind you.)

Can anyone who is not a real estate broker or developer find a general benefit in there somewhere? Any redeeming social value?

These are not rhetorical questions, even if I did get carried away.

Wow. When I saw this post I thought "oh no...here we go again" but you have all shown incredible restraint. What gives? Have you all gone soft on this?

At what age is it determined I am old enough to know better?

And it is being fought on appropriate fronts with the accsd taking a strong leadership role that many of us can totally get behind. Thank you Elito, Rebecca , Chris, and Manual (just for starters)

here is just a sample from a developers sales pitch,, i believe it is typical of how the DOE is being made out the fool.

"The Developer continues to advance the golf course’s permitting process with his entrenched political contacts".
edit: this is relating to a project down south,, but transpose the statement where you need to.

South beach does not yet have final approval. I believe a compromise is trying to be worked out. In the meantime the South Beach gang was recently quietly building up sand roads hoping no one notices.

JZB we all have a common problem of talking about it here and not directly to the town board. I've found some of the issues i have with development I've discussed with everyone here on the board but a visit to the town board is more often than not very effective in stopping violators of permits.
Drop by and tell the planning authority or town board about what you see going on out there.
Today lots of people are dropping buy to voice their opinions in person over the Mitchell development dredging with out a permit.

good morning,
I stopped by the town hall a bit after 8am today. the only councilor there was Pablo Ico, but I spoke with him for a few minutes and he was surprised to hear that no one from David Mitchell's team was at the "public meeting" last night, and appeared surprised that work on this east/west road has stepped up and is nearly finished. He said the council was planning to meet today about a stop order, which although might be too late, is still something if this is true. I would encourage any other members who said they could stop by the town council office today to follow through, and continue the flow of appearances there to express your concern.
