ralph, i dont want to seem hypocritical. i liked JER. it is not a 4-star (as i expected) from US standards. it is very pretty. as i said, it seemed like it was getting old when i was there. nothing a bit of TLC and paint wouldnt fix right up. the landscaping and the beach are just beautiful. the meals are good, but pricey. they had quite a problem with flies & mosquitoes when i was there, but again, that was end of august, bug season. the joke was the "OFF" season, get it? the water in the sinks/shower/pool is SALTY, not salt. i think they just cant get it any purer there, due to location. all drinking water is bottled and available at the bar anytime.

i said i would not dstay there again. this is probably true, however, i once stayed at ramones, and wouldnt stay there again either. there are many beautiful places on AC, i think my next pick might be victoria house.

what i want to stress here, is i think the staff at the hotel is what made it feel good. they were there when i wnated them , weren't when i wanted to be left alone. when i was there there were only 15 guests staying, so the staff outnumbered us. no big times happening, there were only a few of us. the last night of survivor, we all ate at the bar. susan brought our dinners over and it was a riot. they will help you learn to sail the hobie cat, or there are kayaks waiting on the beach. there are a million hermit crabs for your kid to check out just under the surface of the shore. make sure he has his own mask/snorkel.

i believe any vacation is what you make it. some people would have been wowed by the place, others would hate it. i can be happy as long as i can have my creature comforts and a bit of attention. i sat on the beach alone many days while the other 14 guests went diving. the staff waited around for me to need something! i was the only meal cooked that day. the enchaladas were very good, and the paella was awesome. there is a french/thai restaraunt next door that is excellent for dinner if you like spicy. tons of waterfowl to watch.

just don't go expecting the world, and you will have a terrific time. get into town a few times. the water taxis are free 2x daily from JE.

remember, belize is a trird world country. dont expect america. take it for what it is and you will love it.

Jane, thanks. Of course, you are right. I'm not expecting mints on my pillow. I haven't been on an overseas vacation in 15 years... But as long as its green and the water and reef are there I think it will be beautiful. Your pictures certainly were. Jonathan at JER has been really helpful..sent us a video (TNN fishing - Bone fishing with Mark Sosin). My son loved that. Can wait to go. The only negative thing is that lobster will be out of season in April..but conch is in...... THANKS!

ralph, JE has its own dive shop. steve, who runs it is terrific. i snorkeled with him, and my husband did 9 dives in 7 days. he really is good. i watched him certify a few people while i was there. very attentive. give them a try, they go out every morning and every afternoon. his wife is very sweet and his son, eugene, is adorable.

JaneinPA.....Steve from the dive shop at JER was on Temptation Island this PM...doing some kind of pseudo relationship counseling. Apparently, he was successful.
