New Fire Engine for San Pedro
Have you noticed the personnel of the San Pedro Fire Department riding around town in a new fire engine? Well don’t think they are just riding around having a nice time or that they have become a new taxi service in town; the new Fire Engine is a 1992 English model and has the steering wheel on the right hand side. The firefighters need to practice how to drive the vehicle.
“We have to train all the personnel in the fire department to drive the fire engine incase of any emergency,” commented Fire Chief Mr. Jerome Garcia. “We ask the general public to bear with us and to respect the fire engine and move to a side so that the engine could pass.”
The Fire Engine is a 1992 model, 4 x 4 Renult Truck and has lots of storage compartments on the side. It can take up to four persons along with the driver and has the water pump on the back of truck for better convenience in case of emergencies.San Pedro Fire Department takes 3rd place in Fire Olympiad 2009
Fire Chief of the San Pedro Fire Department was more than eager to give us a call and inform us that the team representing San Pedro for the 15th Annual National Fire Service Olympiad took 3rd Place in the overall competition.
There were a total of 10 teams from around the country that congregated at the Yarborough Field at Belize City on August 28 and 29, a two day event where 60 firefighters came together to display their firefighting skills in a competitive manner.
Mr. Miguel Medina of the San Pedro Fire Department was the captain of the team and explained to us that he is very proud of the team although it was made mostly of volunteer firefighters from Benque Viejo del Carmen, as no one from the island volunteered to be a part of the team.
“We would like to encourage San Pedro residents to get involved and volunteer to help us,” commented Mr. Medina. “Our hope is the have a San Pedro team next year made up of San Pedro residents.”
The San Pedro Fire Department Team managed to win the one man-three legged race and the four-man pump drill. They also placed second in the Breathing Apparatus competition and the Dividing Breach competition and won 3rd place in the overall competition.
Mr. Garcia would like to thank the businesses made donations for the team to participate in this year’s Olympiad and a special thanks to Andy Albenio, Eduardo Aguira, Gustavo Moraya, Minor Contreras and Walter Rodriguez (Volunteer firefighters from Benque).http://www.ambergristoday.com/html/archives.php?p=091109#_st2
