Cecilio Perera

Cecilio was born in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, in 1983. He began his formal studies in classical guitar at the age of 9 years under his brother Pedro support. At age 12, he already had an advance student repertoire including works of Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary authors.

He was 14 when he entered the school of music "Jose Jacinto Cuevas" in Merida, under Professor Ricardo Vega Diaz; parallel to these classes, Cecilio took advice from Cuban pianist Alberto Alvarez.

In 1999 he directs his life to music and is accepted to study at the Faculty of Music in the University of Veracruz, Mexico, initially having lessons with Professor Consuelo Bolio and continuing his studies with Master Alfredo Sanchez, who has a significant influence in his formation as a guitarist.

In 2003 Cecilio travels to Europe and is accepted at the Mozarteum in Salzburg to study a bachelor's degree with a major in Classical Guitar. Presently, he continues his musical studies in Austria with Eliot Fisk and Ricardo Gallen, with whom he progresses every day, developing his own style of interpretation of the instrument and beginning an international career, receiving invitations to perform around Europe and America.

He has had the opportunity to attend master classes by world renowned guitarists such as John Williams, David Russell, Angel Romero, Pavel Steidl, Alvaro Pierri, Remy Boucher, Ricardo Cobo, Joaquin Clerch, Stefano Raphoni, Jurgen Hubscher, Hans Bruederl, Enrique Velazco, Victor Pellegrini, Julio Cesar Oliva, Juan Carlos Laguna, Paolo Pegoraro, Pavel Steidl, among others.

He has won prestigious competitions such as the 7th International Guitar Competition "José Tomas-Villa Petrer" 2008 in Valencia, Spain; the Third International Festival and Competition "Boston Guitar Fest 2008" in Massachusetts, USA; the 12th International Festival Competition of Guitar "Leo Brouwer" in Havana, Cuba, 2004; the 11th International Guitar Festival Competition in Morelia, Michoacán, México, 2001; and the National Youth Award of Arts 2003 awarded by the President of Mexico.

As a recitalist he has performed in Costa Rica, United States, Canada, Italy, Cuba, Mexico, Spain, Austria, and other countries. Likewise, he has performed with leading orchestras interpreting works such as El Concierto de Aranjuez y Fantasia para un Gentil Hombre by Joaquin Rodrigo; El Concierto Elegiaco and El Concierto de Toronto by Leo Brouwer.

I hope the organisers realise that logistics are sufficient for people living on islands not to be able to get to such events. I would have gone if it didn't mean finding an hotel for the night.
