I will be in Belize for about two weeks starting March 28. (In between jobs, so needing a good relaxing break.) I have been checking out the posts on this message board and have gotten some really great information. Thank you! But I thought it might help to get some more specific info, if you don't mind.

For the first week, I will be by myself, and then a friend will be joining me for the second week. I'm thinking about getting my advanced diving cert. while I'm there. I am also a big fan of good beaches (crystal clear/blue and green water, white sand and palm trees).

Ideally I would park myself at a resort on AC like Ramon's or Tropica (Fodor's says it's the best beach on the island -- True?) for the full two weeks, where I could make some friends and stay a while. But I would also like to do alot of diving, including the diving farther out. In Fodor's they say that Blue Hole Dive Center has a speedy boat that does a day trip to Turneffe and the Blue Hole. Any comments on that?

The other option would be to spend my first week on a live/aboard or stay out at Turneffe Atoll to do the dives that are way out there. Maybe get my advanced cert. then. And then spend the second week in AC, doing the closer reef dives and hanging out in SP. What do you think? Also, are the beaches on the other cayes better than AC -- like Lighthouse, Turneffe or St. George's?

Any recommendations about a good dive outfit, how best to do the far out dives, best beaches and places to stay are very appreciated, and anything else you think I might want to know, are VERY appreciated.

Also, any recommendations for a good travel agent? It would be nice to have someone else do the legwork!

IMHO the live aboard or trip to Turneefe is a great idea as boat trips to Blue Hole are 2 1/2 hours by boat. Tour that area as it is unique and offers more accessible diving. After 4-5 days there you will be ready for the "civilized" towmn and night liffe of SP. You can do a recon of the area for your friend and be ready to rock.

I'd stay on AC and visit out from here. The ride to Turneffe etc is awesome, and well worth doing, as is the Lamanai trip among others...

Might talk to Elodia at , [email protected] , she is pretty good at doing some of that legwork for ya!

I just returned from five days and we dove with Amigos del Mar--this is the third time I have been to San Pedro and I have dived with them every time. They are outstanding and have an unbelievable and contagious enthusiasm for everything they do. The Blue Hole is a thrilling dive (you will probably encounter a lot of sharks) but the wall diving at Lighthouse is also excellent--Cathedral Wall, Half Moon Caye, etc. I took my 14 year old son on this trip so we did three wall dives instead of the Blue Hole on our Lighthouse trip this time--all were fantastic --he still talks about the incredible dives we had that day and the swim we had with a large school of dolphins on the way home as Amigos stopped the boat and instructed us how to quietly snorkel with them--a great experience. Amigos is a really fantastic outfit.

I always thought that Blue Hole Divers contracted Amigo's boats. If I'm correct in that assumption, that means that Blue Hole Divers fast boat, is actually Amigo's. Amigo's is probably the premier operation in SP.
