Lulamayhem, if you practice basic common sense you will most likely not encounter any crime. Don't bring strangers home, don't flash wads of cash or too much flashy jewelry, don't brag about all of the stuff you might have at home. Secure your home and valuables when you leave the premises or when you go to bed at night. Be aware of your surroundings and who you are keeping company with.

You can have a lot of fun, make lots of friends and have a safe existence, but you must be wise.

Robbery and burglary are not the same thing. One involves an assault on people, the other involves an opportunity to lift some items when nobody is looking.

IMHO all resorts have a responsibility to their guests to have on-site security. It is a huge deterrent to criminals.

If you live in the area, why not read the newspaper? I've found that the local papers usually have decent coverage, not to mention what you can learn from talking to your neighbors.

A fish and a bird can fall in love, but where will they build their nest?

Take a stroll down to the Palapa Bar and introduce yourself to Scott Harnish. He is the local neighbourhood watch president. He will be happy to chat with you and answer your neighbourhood questions.

There have been numerous cases where serious crimes were not reported in newspapers or by broadcast media. What about the repeated armed robberies in the Chaa Creek area a couple of years ago that were NEVER reported in Belize, nor to our everlasting shame were tourists warned by resorts not to put themselves into high danger. Only when a victim reported it back home in the USA did news of it filter down here. Yet the police, the resorts, the news media and the BTB all knew that it was happening.

The San Pedro papers seemed to me to have decent coverage. For example, there are often items under the police blotter.
