GOB TO RECEIVE FUNDS FOR THE INSTALLATION OF A SOLAR GRID

Signing Ceremonies were held this morning in Belmopan for an exchange of notes and a grant agreement between the government of Japan and the Government of Belize. This is in respect of a Project for the Introduction of Clean Energy by Solar Electricity Generation Systems. The note provides a framework for Japanese economic cooperation to be extended to Belize with a view to strengthening friendly and cooperative relations between Japan and Belize and to support the efforts by the Government of Belize to address climate change as well as on the improvement of access to clean energy. This project involves the establishment of a photovoltaic electricity generation system in Belmopan which converts solar energy to electrical power, which in turn will be sold to the national electrical grid system. Work on the project is expected to commence in mid 2010 and to be completed by August 2011.

Japan Gives Belize $10 million for Solar Energy Project

The Japanese government is helping the Government of Belize with a solar energy project. It’s in the spirit of combating climate change and US$5 million will be spent on a solar electricity generation system which will produce enough energy to sell into the national grid – or at least that’s the idea. Signing on behalf of the Government of Belize was Financial Secretary Joe Waight and he told the Government Press Office more.

Joe Waight, Financial Secretary
“It is a small project, experimental in a sense. Essentially it consists of a bank of panels that will convert radiation from the sun into electricity. The electricity will then be converted and linked to the national grid, the BEL power system. BEL will pay us for what we produce and that money will then go to maintaining the site and also to providing financial resources for other projects of the same type.”

Work on the project is expected to start in mid- 2010 and should be completed by August 2011.

That's great but, vendors are punished for using bio-degradable containers.
Duty on green containers is like 30%, styro is 5%.

Hopefully people who use green containers for their businesses will join together and question that or get it changed.

I have a brochure from EcoFriendly Solutions Limited, located at 4 Miles, Western Highway. It's undated, so I don't know how old it is.

They are a company that "promotes environmentally friendly products and services".

Some of the items are biodegradable plates, bowls, food containers, cutlery, garbage bags and cups. Items are microwavable, heat & cold resistant and reusable.

After disposal, and the product is in contact with heat, light, water & soil, decomposition is said to be complete within 47 days.

There are no prices on the brochure, and no mention of whether the products are manufactured in Belize or imported.

For more information, contact the company directly:

Mister
TWO fellows from EcoFriendly solutions came to a CHAMBER OF COMMERCE meeting back in November and brought samples of their complete line. We had a good turn out that day and everyone was impressed. They donated some large trash bags for the SACNW clean-up that weekend. They reported back that these bags were even stronger than the standard black ones.
Richie's store (at the round-about) carries their products. I am impressed. A number of restaurants (Blue Water Grill for one) are using some of their products for take-out.

Baby step by baby step a lot can be accomplished.
