Smart to introduce Huawei 3G network
By William Ysaguirre - Freelance WriterSmart Speednet has moved to keep its subscribers at the forefront of technological advances by upgrading its network to a brand new 3G (EVDO Rev. A) network with the Huawei Corporation of China.
Smart CEO Ernesto Torres and Mr Sun Jingbo of Huawei signed the agreement in a short ceremony at the Radisson Fort George Hotel last Thursday evening. Torres said the company expects to roll out the new network over the next six to eight months. The company is also moving to become more independent of Belize Telemedia by investing in 8 new towers throughout the country.
Sun Jingbo explained that the Huawei network has over 1.3 billion subscribers in 64 countries, and its mission is to focus on customers’ market challenges and needs by providing excellent communications network solutions and services in order to consistently create maximum value for customers.
Smart’s Director of Product Development Anthony Mahler explained that while their current network offers customers acceptable speeds to browse the Internet and download files, the new 3G network will simply blow away customers as they enjoy a greatly enhanced Internet experience with faster Internet speeds and more mobile and data applications.
The term “3G’ refers to the fact that this is the third Generation in the development of mobile telecommunications standards and includes CDMA, wide-area wireless voice with improved quality and wider coverage in more places, mobile video calls, improved SMS service and wireless data with higher upload and download speeds. Smart customers will be able to simultaneously talk and access data services at faster speeds.
With the greater network capacity, Smart users will have advanced multimedia services such as data and music downloads, file transfers with friends, mobile TV and video streaming, instant messaging and location based services.
Since Speednet launched the Smart commercial brand on March 29, 2005, their customer base has grown by leaps and bounds from over 5,000 customers in the first few months to over 90,000 customers at present. The company has 10 showrooms countrywide, 10 full service dealers and over 1000 agents across the country. Customers sent 12 million text messages per month, and enjoy innovative services such as the Smart Zone, Circle, SOS services, and Phone Directory.
