The price of a 100 pound cylinder of butane gas has increased by 10 dollars. A government release says this is as a result of continuous spikes over the last quarter in international petroleum prices and by-products of the industry. It says this has been brought on partially, by seasonal demand from bursts in increased consumption particularly due to extreme weather conditions and subsequently a draw down on international inventories to meet increased demand. Consumers in Belize City and Corozal will now pay 107 dollars, in Orange Walk 108 dollars, 109 dollars in Belmopan and San Ignacio, 110 in Benque Viejo del Carmen, 111 dollars in Dangriga and 112 dollars in Punta Gorda. Government says it is currently researching and exploring options that are aimed at alleviating future price hikes. Government says through continuous dialogue with the importers of liquid petroleum gas they are seeking solutions to resolve and address concerns surrounding the commodity and its price.

Price of butane and diesel shooting up

The price of fuel went up in the first week of the year and now it's cooking gas that's going up and it's no minor increase. In fact, the price per hundred pound cylinder of butane is taking an alarming ten dollar jump beginning Saturday. What's worse is that it follows a seven dollar increase only two months ago. And we surely hope you're sitting down while you listen to the new prices and then head out to the gas depot. In the Belize and Corozal districts butane will be sold at a hundred and seventeen dollars, while it will go for a hundred and eighteen in Orange Walk. Heading west, in Belmopan and San Ignacio, the price will go up to a hundred and nineteen dollars and a hundred and twenty in Benque Viejo. In the south, it's a hundred and twenty-one dollars in Dangriga and a hundred and twenty-two in Punta Gorda. In a government press release today, the price hike was attributed to continuous increases in acquisition costs in the last quarter of 2009.

And when you head to the gas depot, be sure to stop at the fuel station because diesel will increase by thirty-eight cents on Sunday night. That takes it from seven dollars and sixty-eight cents to over the eight dollar mark at eight-oh-six.
