I'll be staying in San Pedro for 10 days next month, in a room with a kitchen. I plan to bring some non perishables for cooking, and I know where the grocery store is on the island, but I'm wondering where should I buy fresh produce? I've been to the island twice before, but never stayed somewhere where I could cook, and therefore never paid attention to the selection of fruits and vegs. Suggestions?

There are a number of great grocery stores on the island and it is always worth shopping around as many of them have very different stock and different prices. There are also many small fruit and veg stalls as well as the Greenhouse, which is air conditioned and good for luxury produce and Big Tree, which can make you up a fresh fruit drink while you wait. My favourite fruit and veg vendor is Maria, opposite Belize Yacht Club. Shopping around can be great fun and you'll get to know a lot more about San Pedro that way.

AH we met Maria last week. Fabulous fruit juice she made fresh for us. But we went back next day for some oromised vegatable juice, and her machine was broke.

We have found the best place to get fresh produce is at the lagoon next to the football field. A boat comes in every Tuesday morning from the mainland (I am told) and their produce is very fresh, and far cheaper than anything we have bought from the stores or street-sellers in AC so far. We paid $BZ18 last week for 3 bags of a selection of fresh produce...excellent!

Maria sells great coconut water too $15 bzd a gallon.
