We will be diving in Feb. and we want to make sure we go to some of the better, unique sites. I know a few of the people on this forum are experts in the area and are quite knowledgeable about the more infrequented sites. We don't want to go just to the normal "tourist"sites. Could a few of you comment on some of your favorite local sites? Not really talking about the blue hole or atolls. FYI we staying on the north edge of town.

Local diving is really easy: you start your 2 tank dive at 9am and by about 12.30 you are into your first Belikin of the day.
Having done about 300 or so dives in San Pedro over the last 5 years my personal favorites are:
Tackle Box
Pillar Coral
Cyprus Gardens
Victoria
Eagle Ray Canyons

Remember all the local dives are finger coral canyons so don't expect to see abundant colors. The wall diving is at Turneffe and is spectacular.

For shallow dive with lots of marine life and coral, definitely Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley. One place you can dive and snorkel, and the other you can only snorkel. I can't remember now which one...

(Some may say they are crowded, but that is a relative term. There is a reason they are "crowded," and it is because they are worth it! I have never found them to be too crowded, and have been to both several times.)

Make sure you dive Hol Chan during the day & then come back & do a nite dive there. I'd have to say this is the best nite dive I ever made. The Turneff trip is a all day trip but the wall there is fantastic & well worth the trip.

On the last night dive I did at Hol Chan I say three new creatures I had never seen before. One was a white serpent like creature with blue dots/spots another was a black basket star the third a crab that was configured as a round ball and rolled with the currents.
Hol Chan Night Dives are always a charge.

Hol Chan night dives during a full moon are incredible. If the circumstances are just right you can see a lot without the lights on. That is way cool.

The most magical night dives I've done have been with a full moon and calm seas at Tuffy, on the large sandy area by the mooring, 50ft down. On one dive we were entranced by several "dancing" octopii.

But I'm intrigued by Elbert's black basket star. I've never knowingly seen one.

McLovin - you are in luck if you are staying on the north end of the island. There are a lot of good dive shops up there and our very own Elbert is one of the best at White Sands Dive Shop. Another of my favorite guys is Billy Leslie with Tuff-N-Nuff which is located at Belizean Shores Resort.

So many divers come here with predetermined places they want to go AND many of the dive masters and boat captains want to go hang out where their buddies are that they head south.

I always ask to be taken north. You can too.
