In the brochure for Coral Beach Divers printed in 1972 ( //AmbergrisCaye.com/photogallery/100128.html ) it says "The reef is so near the beach of Amergris [sic] that experienced swimmers can reach it easily by snorkeling [sic]".

Still physically possible, but I doubt any diveshop operator would recommend that nowadays.

Back in the early 1980's after school there was a whole gang of us that would swim from the Paradise Hotel pier, out to the reef and back most days. It was similar to the way folks go for a stroll along the beach these days. We would swim, laugh, chat, goof around. Not snorkeling, just swimming. Sometimes it was challenging and more of a race. But of course the boat traffic was minimal back then.

Amazing. I stay at Paradise Villas and thought I recognized the area. Thanks Marty for the trip in the WayBack Machine.
