If we think we can seriously deplete the numbers of lion fish merely by catching them we are deluding ourselves. There's a big ocean out there, and we interface with only a tiny proportion of it. No, we have to accept that they're here and they're staying here.

to nullify the toxin in the fish (once speared, prior to handling) immerse the fish for 5-10 minutes in a concentrated brine ice bath (fill a cooler with ice water and a good lb of salt.) Then you can clean as you would any other fish.

We had some under the Rojo dock a while back... one small one was speared... I made it into a taco.

BTW, Lionfish can get LARGE... the ones here I've seen are tiny by comparison to the ones off the coast of the US South East...

Very worrisome, I'm not joking about eating them, we are a fierce predator if it taste good and they do,we will eat them.
If it became popular on menus it could impact the population growth dramatically.
San Pedro is full of fishermen that make a living selling what they catch everyday to restaurants and if restaurants have lion fish on the menu lion fish will be killed by the bucket full daily.

this is a really smart idea, elbert. you wont eradicate them, but might at least make a dent.

btw - love the video - we were busting up - 'tastes like chicken'! LOL!

Hell, I just saw one this afternoon about 12 inches across in a crack at Mexico Rocks...

If I had known, I would have been less elated!

If our species can overfish whole areas of the oceans, then I do believe we can overfish the lionfish. As Elbert says, we humans are fierce predators.

Man's overfishing of the oceans is by indiscriminate trawling with giant nets. All species are gathered including ones not wanted, and under EU law (don't know about other places) those you're not allowed to catch are simply thrown dead back into the ocean. Ironically it is the Spanish who have largely destroyed fish stocks around Britain and the rest of Europe, and the EU has given them special permission to do so!

In this area we don't trawl (yet), so the bulk of fish stocks are safe. That includes the lion fish. No amount of small-scale fishing will have any material effect upon their numbers, as they breed far faster than they're caught.

Found this while looking at info about Lion Fish, looks like it could be fun. Maybe someone would like to have a tourney.

If anyone thinks being a popular item on a menu doesn't deplete the species look at the lobster harvest stats. from the Belize Fisherman's cooperatives like, Caribea Producers, Northern Fishermen or Placencia Producers spanning the last 20 years,
and they are controlled harvests with size and season.
