We are heading to Belize at the end of August... Never been there and have read lots of info on this board and it ALL sounds good. The question we are asking each other now is should we stay on Ambergris or the mainland? The goal of the trip is to relax, drink a few, eat some good food AND most importantly research available Real Estate. How difficult (timing.. $$$) is it to get from AC to the mainland. Any info/suggestions will be appreciated!

Although I have never taken the boat, I think it's about $25.00 US dollars and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes or so. Someone on the board will know the answer to this! Help, Help.

Ambergris Caye is a great place, especially for relaxing and food and drink but those who just visit Ambergris Caye are seeing only a tiny part of Belize. Ambergris Caye is an island smaller than Barbados, whereas mainland Belize is about the size of Massachusetts.

That goes double for real estate. There's a tremendous variety of property options on the mainland, from beachfront lots to small farms to homes in all prices ranges.

I think if you're serious about looking at property in Belize, you'd probably want to visit San Pedro and also spend time in Cayo, Corozal, Placencia and maybe PG areas.

For info on the mainland, you might see my Belize First Guide to Mainland Belize (available from Amazon.com) and for info on buying, investing, or retiring in Belize my new book, Adaptor Kit: Belize, will be out from Avalon in the summer. I also did the update on the new Fodor's Guide.

Sounds like if we are anticipating frequent trips to the mainland then we may want to stay there.. 1+ hour boats rides or 90x2 RT might get old/pricey.
The problem is we have NO idea how much time we will need to spend on the mainland. A couple of trips for certain. Maybe no more than that if we find Real Estate on AC...., however, I wanted to check out New Town and Placencia for Real Estate as well.

Small correction: The ferry/water taxi between San Pedro and Belize City is US$12.50 one-way, not US$25 as someone else stated.
