Attention all Customers

We at Marelco your Yamaha distributor would like to report to you that it is alleged that the gas stations in Belize are mixing the foreign fuel with the local fuel produced in Belize or using the local fuel for sale at gas stations. This is also happening to vehicles but now it is happening to outboard motors. The mixed fuel, it is alleged, increases the operating temperature of the engine thus causing the engine to get hotter than normal. This then causes the engine to break up.

We are suggesting that for the 2-stroke engines, instead of the usual ratio 1 quart of oil to 10 - 12 gallons of fuel, that as a temporary counter measure you start using 1 quarts of oil to 10 - 12 gallons of fuel. We believe that this might help to save your engine. When fueling your engine at any gas station please ask them if they are selling the mixed fuel, because this fuel will damage your engine and you should avoid using it if possible.

Many engines have been broken up because of the alleged inferior fuel, so please be careful as it can happen to you.

Please remember that we only suspect that it is the fuel that is causing the damage to the engines, but we are trying to get concrete evidence. The bottom line is that engines that go to the fuel stations, after a while break up. You be the judge. Please investigate on your own.

If you have any questions or enquiries please do not hesitate to contact us at 610-2295 or 670-0007. Thanks, A. Madrid

Do we know what the gas station by Amigo's is selling? Most local dive operators fuel up there. And what about the fuel sold for vehicles south of town?

There aren't any refineries in Belize so all fuel would be foreign. I wonder if they are talking about ethanol.

I believe running a 2-T motor on an ethanol mix would cause great over-heating. This sounds like a serious problem.

Ahh, Thats it. Two strokes and ethanol is not good. Causes several problems.

Ethanol has less BTU than gas and can cause a lean condition or running hot.

Belize oil is "sweet oil", and needs less refining. During elections, PM Dean Barrow promised lower everything (water, fuel, taxes, telephone, electricity etc.) The fuel part he was going to accomplish by mixing imported fuel with "local sweet" unrefined oil.

The recent massive motor-engine failures might be the result of that promise. Fact is that new (hi-tech) outboard engines in Belize have been dying everywhere in record time recently and fuel is being investigated as possible cause by everyone in Belize (from Dive shops to suppliers).

I asked at the boat filling station this morning while we were fueling the boat. They said their fuel comes from Venezuela and they aren't aware of a problem. They hadn't heard of Marelco's public warning.

You wont notice any difference on a golf cart.

Correct me if I'm wrong but "sweet oil" can only be used as a replacement/additive for diesel. My understanding is that is that the Mennonites have been using the "sweet oil" in their diesel engines. Even "sweet oil" needs to be refined to create gasoline so I can see no reason why you would combine the two.
