First time poster, but I've been reading the message board for the past 6 years and have been to Ambergris a few times. It gets in your blood! Someone read about a phosphorescent pool to swim in, in Belize. It's on one of the "100 Things to See" lists going around here. I know the ocean will have phosphorus at night, but haven't heard of a water source in Belize. Any ideas? Or was this person on to much Belikin! Looking forward to Lobster Fest.

Nothing in Belize that I know of as far as a Pool you may be getting mixed up with the pool in Puerto Rico called Bioluminecent Bay

Bioluminescent Bay

Located in Puerto Rico, on Vieques Island, there is a shallow body of water with a narrow inlet known as Mosquito Bay. In each gallon of the bay there are 720,000 phosphorescent single-celled organisms that glow when they are agitated. It is a defense mechanism - the glowing is designed to daze whatever predator is bothering the tiny dinoflagellates.

All together the bay, on a moonless night, will produce more than enough light to read. Swimming in Mosquito Bay will cause your limbs to be bathed in blue-green light. If you stop moving the light will dim, and eventually disappear completely, but each time you twitch it begins anew.

Yes, SWC does has phosphorescent creatures you can see at night, as does Puerto Rico and I think, Blackpool in England. Probably other places as well. Incredible to see them light up.

Bioluminesance can be seen at night at most dive areas however the difference with the Puerto Rico Site is its a massivly concentrated Pool where there is literally millions of them all in one area and it literally lights up the whole area when someone or something swims through it.

A good place to see it on a smaller scale is Hol chan at night, just turn your light off and flick your fingers and you will see little sparkles of light.

Very cool

There is a lagoon near Sittee River where there is bioluminescence. Our hosts took us there and explained that the local guys love to pee in the lagoon to trigger the glowing and write their names (oh boys). They call it 'Gotta Glow Lagoon'.

Gaz, Colly and all, thanks for the info on the phosphorescence. We knew the message board would have some good ideas! Now there are a few more places to check out the next trip down. The "Bucket list" keeps growing. ODE

My daughter reported that one night at the end of the barge parked in front of the sea wall there was a large area lighted up. We do have a number of Moray eels living in the wall so they may have been out hunting. She said it was beautiful.
