Its the same situation, cheap lots for local people that are promised water and sewage.
Now a disaster that San Pedro has to have foreign governments come in a rescue inhabitants.

Think Elbert meant to say foreign groups, as in the University of Mississippi fund raising project.

Not with holding anything Jessy
I was referring to this;
San Mateo Empowerment Project
Category:
Organizations - Volunteer Organizations
Description:
This is a fundraising campaign created by students in the University of Mississippi Dept. of Social Work to support a community-led effort in San Mateo, Belize, to replace miles of dangerous plank bridges with gravel and sand roads. The construction of roads will remove a serious safety hazard for children and lead to wider access to water, electricity, and sewage systems for thousands of San Mateo's residents.

You can help by pledging a donation of any amount and spreading the word! Please contact one of the group's administrators if you'd like to get involved. (read less)

A shame indeed. I have been to the San Mateo "development' and I have talked at length to some of the residents. The slum, for that is what it is, is indeed a discredit to those who planned it, and a blot on AC's landscape.
The Anglican school which feeds nearly 500 children every day,in such dire surroundings, is indeed to be congratulated
San Mateo is a testament to the folly of our planning and environmental law not being properly enforced by the DoE.
Incidentally, Juan's explanation of the EIA procedure missed out the fact that the EIA or LLES, once done, is sent to the NEAC-the DoE's secret committee for evaluation.
So whatever decisions were or were not made, and on what grounds, we shall never know, since the minutes of the meetings are, scandously, not available to the public.
There will never be proper planning that the people of Belize can have confidence in,whilst the DoE hides its decision making process from public view.
San Mateo may or may not be a victim of this secrecy. To quote a famous satirical UK TV star, "we don't know what we don't know..."

San Mateo is what happens when you give people land in order to get elected.
