Hi Everyone,

I am hopefully planning a trip to AC this September. This board is great, and as my trip comes closer I am sure I will be here with lots of questions!

For now, I read somewhere that there are no ATM machines in Belize. Is this true? If not, what would be the prefered way of spending money, for tours, and at the local shops. US cash? I have never used travelers checks, but willing to. And if the tour operators take credit cards, do the Visa/Mastercard debit cards work, like they do in the states?

Thanks for the advice.

Badkitty...I have not been to AC yet, and was wondering the same questions. Check out the amex and exchange rate posts. They might be a little helpful.
Good Luck!

Badkitty, we took US dollars when we went and there is absolutely no problem using it. We took mostly $20s but once there realized you can use smaller bills easily. You will always get back Belize dollars or change, so if you have any of that left when you leave, there is a bank at the Airport in Belize City, and you can have it exchanged there if you do not do so in SP. But feel sure to know, spending US dollars is "No problem mon", just like everything in SP. Have a great trip.

I, too, am curious about ATM's. Also, I read on another post that plastic is accepted most places. How about debit cards? (MC or Visa). I know traveler's checks and cash can be used anywhere, but if I can get away with carrying a little less of it with me, great!

I just read that they do have atm's on AC, but they do not work for cards that were not issued in Belize! So that is a no!

But I am still curious to know if debit cards can be used as credit cards in AC. Anyone know?

Joanna and Sharon,

For what it's worth, I used my visa check card to pay for my hotel room and they didn't even charge a surcharge. I also used it at 2 restaurants, where the surcharge was very minimal. If your debit card has a Visa or MC logo, you should be good to go!

As far as I know if you have a debit/bank card with a 16 digit number and the Visa or Mastercard logo on it, it is exactly the same as having a normal Visa or Mastercard, except that it is withdrawn from your bank account rather than a line of credit. I've never had a problem using my Visa/ATM card overseas, although I haven't been to Belize yet so I cant speak to that end.

I also used my Visa/ATM 16 digit card in Europe, Bahamas and Mexico to get money out of my bank account and it worked great but not sure if this can be done in SP. Does anyone know?
