If the information about rogue cops has you spinning, well government is acknowledging that crime has reached crisis proportions. Last week, Mayor Zenaida Moya Flowers convened an anti-crime prevention summit in Belize City as a CITCO effort; the jury is still out on whether or not that will be met with success. But we do note that suddenly someone woke up from a deep slumber and a press release about Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, was dedicated to crime and the lack of confidence in the police department. The government of Belize will be fleshing out an initiative on June second, which will include the reorganization of the police department to address and punish rogue behavior. According to Cabinet, it has been advised that the DPP’s office expects to make a decision soon in the case of police corporal Gavin Sanchez who was killed in San Pedro by Sergeant Paulino Reyes on March eighteenth and Stephen Buckley who was unnecessarily shot in Belize City by police on April twenty-eighth. On Tuesday Constable Alpheus Parham was charged with the murder of Alex Goff and Corporal Jorge Lemus and Constable Lazaro Catch were charged with manslaughter and abetment to commit manslaughter. But back to the new initiative, the government will be establishing a project office and will begin consultations with the community and for the umpteenth time, it says it will be implementing the recommendations of the Crooks Report. It will be interesting to note if the new initiative contemplates a change at the top of the Ministry of National Security.
