Heavy and relentless rains over the past week and weekend caused widespread flooding in the Stann Creek District and kept the National Emergency Management Office busy responding to various calls for rescue. Several major bridges flooded out, including the low lying Kendall Bridge which came under six feet of water from the torrential rains. The approach to the Mullins River temporary bridge was washed away isolating the residents of Mullins River Village. However, the approach has since been repaired by the Ministry of Works, restoring access to vehicular traffic.
On Saturday, at around 5:30 A.M., a flash flood occurred at Middlesex causing the Ministry of Works, for the second time in a week to temporarily open the new Middlesex Bridge. On Monday around 7:30 P.M., NEMO received information that one of three buses on an excursion to Gales Point, Manatee was trapped in the area of Soldier Creek Bridge on the Coastal Road due to flooding in the area. The Stann Creek District Emergency Committee deployed the Police with a Ministry of Works dump truck from Dangriga to rescue members of the excursion.

NEMO says it is currently monitoring an area of disturbance in the Pacific just south of El Salvador which is expected to cross into Central America and cause flooding in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Belize later this week. The public is asked to stay alert and listen to the National Meteorological Service weather reports and NEMO advisories so as to take the necessary actions required to save life and protect property.

Looks like this area will be in for more heavy rains over the weekend and into early next week too.

Friends of mine were waist deep in water on the coastal highway over the weekend - if you must drive, take a well elevated vehicle.
Further, take some big long sticks and a rope. If you are not sure why to take the sticks and rope, don't drive!
