To: All Ambergris North Island Residents and Business Owners
Fm: Special Constable Chris Berlin
June 14 2010
I am writing you on behalf of the San Pedro Police detachment. I am pleased to inform you that we have been the recipients of a generous donation of much needed security equipment by Mr. Don Listwin of Canary Cove in the Mexico Rocks area.
First, Mr. Listwin has donated a new Toyota 4x4 pickup as a designated North Patrol Police vehicle. This vehicle will be maintained at his expense and driven only by authorized drivers. The Police department has responded by allocating manpower resources to provide for daily/nightly patrols and hotel checks along the current navigable track which ends 8 miles north at the Costa Maya Resort area. Additionally the Mobile is on 24x7 standby to respond to emergency calls by both regular Police, Tourism Police and volunteer Special Constable personnel. Please dial 911 for assistance.
Secondly, Mr. Listwin is ordering a VHF radio tower and repeater communications system to be installed on his property. This system should be operational in about 60 days and it will have back up generator power in the event of outages due to storms and so forth. Residents and security personnel from the bridge area to 14 miles north will be able to use this repeater system to directly communicate among themselves, the Police station and the Coast Guard on pre-programmed radio frequencies. Licensed and programmed handheld Motorola radios can be purchased in country from a dealer for approximately $bz 1800. Please contact me for details on ordering.
Thirdly, Mr. Listwin has pledged to upgrade the processing capabilities at our Police Station and Magistrate’s Court by equipping the staff with 10 new computers and printers with back up power supplies. To date 5 have been delivered and installed. The other 5 will be delivered in July.
Supplementing this big leap forward in North Island security, the North Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch has just recently inaugurated a Police Booth which is located in the North Tres Cocos area. The Police department is now also providing a rotation of Police officers and BDF personnel to man this station 3 times a week.
However, as you are all probably well aware, the Government of Belize has put the Police Department on a very restricted budget. We are lacking the manpower and basic supplementation to police the island as is required. Therefore we do need additional financial assistance from the North community to assist in sustaining these daily patrols and the 24 hour emergency response service of the North Patrol team.
Therefore we would like to ask the North residents and business owners to assist with monetary pledges to [email protected]
so that the donations can be pooled to fund the following:
- VHF radio and flashlights for patrol vehicle.
- North Patrol uniforms and rain gear.
- Additional funding for special duty patrols and fuel.
- First Aid kit.
- Tow straps, ropes, hand winch, shovel, axe, heavy duty jack.
Our goal at this time is to collect a minimum of $bz 25,000 to help support this project through at least the end of this year. Donations will be managed though the same fund that spearheaded this project.
Please feel free to contact Chris Berlin at [email protected]
or the Officer in Command of the Coastal Division, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr. Dennis Arnold, at 601-9586 for any input or further information.
