Awoke, early as always..talked our grounds guy into making coffee early...ate a snak...grabbed my gear and headed for my dock to await the pickup boat for my trip to the Outer Cays...
The Crew settled us in..the Captain (Horace) gave a lecture on what was to come..and we were off...the transit takes 2-3 hours to the first dive site through some of the most incredible blue waters I've seen in years...The different shades are beyond any words...ya just have to go and see for yourself! Turneffe atoll crossing was thru a section that got rather shallow and we kicked up the bottom slightly...kinda fun ...
as we exited we sighted a Tiger Shark Rakeing through a school of fish with evil purpose...glad we we're in the boat still...he tore them up...
First Dive was at Lighthouse Reef Atoll...110' 35min Vis Good..seas 2-3'
Saw a greater abundance of fish here than close to AC.includeing the ever present Barracuda..always seemed to be one hanging out under the boat!
First exciting moment was the 20lb Lobster we sighted!!! We could have eaten for days on him..but alas..he was there for us to see and others to share..to take such a being away from his/her home would have been a crime! Many Schools of Juve Parrot passed like a bright Blue wave, up and over the pristine coral, several Very large grouper and snapper...reef was in good shape for haveing sustained a direct hit from Keith...
The Best was still to come.....

EAGLE RAY WALL 78' 40min total dive time.
Water Vis good seas calmer..area was more protected...Many schools of Common reef species, snapper, parrots of several types, Damsels, squirrelfish, 1 small spotted Moray, 1 good size Green Moray, and the always present Barracuda escort.
Stopped and ate a very well made and tasty lunch made by Norma..man can she cook...I was so full I could hardly move...
****** HALF MOON CAYE WALL**************
FOLKS, IF THERE IS ANY DIVE IN THE AREA THIS IS THE ONE TO DO!!!!!!!
110' 40 MIN VIS UNLIMITED..SEAS CALM
After all were equalized and ready we followed a short canyon run to the edge of a 1000' drop off wall...I have seldom felt so close to "mother earth". The Sheer drop along the wall was overwelming...like flying into outer space..I was overcome with a sense of truly being only a small part of an immence universe...the colors were bright and vast schools of reef species(darn near every fish in the book were found here) Be sure to take your time and look closely! Bring a good bright light...you'll be able to see even more!...before we knew it...we were out of bottom time and had to head up.
I will dive this spot again, many times just to see more of it...too much to see in a short time!
Pulled into Half Moon Caye Reserve..payed they Ranger the required 10bz and set off to explore the Real Temptation Island...this small caye is a breathtaking sight with a surface wreck (a British supply ship) grounded near the light house...very spooky...Looks like a few small buildings are being put up for overnight stays...
Made our way into the Bird Reserve..100's of Goofy's, with serveral babies in their down coating ...got some great pictures..can't wait to see them!!! Another Couple and I set off to the other side with a flashlight and found a Coral Shrine someone had built..I added my own part out of repect for the thoughtful person who choose to set this part of the world aside for a work of spiritual expression.
As we made our way back to the Boat and our next meal...we stopped in the dense jungle to listen...Almost a Hitchcock like sound emananted from the leaves surrounding us along the path...the Hermit Crabs had decided to choose this moment to begin their march to forage..we counted thousands..so many we had a hard time walking on the path for fear we might crush one....very errie!!!
Ate another WONDERFUL meal on board..talked with the crew...and other divers about the Wicked day we had , then prepared for our night under the stars...
I picked the upper back deck chair to sleep in...putting the provided mattress on top of it...some went to the island ..some in the bunk beds in the cabin. The Stars were brighter than I have seen since my Navy days...with shooting stars aplenty! A single cloud dropped a mist on us..cooling our sunburned bodies...if ya sleep on the top deck BE sure to get 2 blankets....I slept lightly inticipating the GREAT BLUE HOLE the next day...
More in part 3....

Mark,
You are such a great writer! I feel like I was in the water with you! That's it...next time I am getting certified so I can see even more of what I was able to get a taste of on my resort dive.
The shooting stars are beautiful aren't they? I got a little flutter in my tummy every time I saw one...
Did you make a wish? I'll bet I can guess what it was [Linked Image]

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...Nature in and of itself is subject to change...as we too are...

I'm somewhat jaded as to the diveing..it was all spectacular...but again, I'm easily captivated by even the smallest of sea creatures...my cup is easily filled. Hope you find your rainbow in this wonder sea of life.

crawfish, I'd like to know specifically why you think the diving sucks. How many dive sites have you done and what other dive areas are you comparing them too?
