Two businesses in the Cayo District were scammed with counterfeit Belizean currency in the past few days. The first report came from George Devassy, the owner of South Indian Restaurant in San Ignacio Town. Devassy says that at about nine p.m. on Monday night, two men entered the restaurant and purchased beers, paying with a fifty dollar bill. It wasn’t until after the men received their change and left that Devassy realized the note was fake. He headed to the Police Station to make a report where he saw the same patrons detained. Kareem Grant and Robert Young were arrested and charged for Possession of Counterfeit Currency.

Prior to the detention, Grant, a Belize City fisherman was standing in front of Tai San Store on Burns Avenue in San Ignacio Town when a police patrol searched him and found a plastic bag containing two fake hundred dollar notes and a single counterfeit fifty dollar bill.

The next victim in the counterfeit scam was Sarita Tzib, a Vegetable Vendor from the Savannah area, who says that on Monday, a woman purchased a bottle of coconut oil for fourteen dollars and also paid with a fifty dollar note. The customer, Shawn Gardiner was detained, and while at the Police Station she dropped some cash on the ground which was recovered by officers. Those bills also turned out to be more counterfeit notes in the form of two hundred dollar bills and two fifty dollar bills. Gardener was also charged with Possession of Counterfeit Currency.

Counterfeit notes have surfaced in the Cayo District. Yesterday police conducted a search on one Kareem Grant, a resident of Belize City, who was standing in front of Tai San Store on Burns Avenue in San Ignacio Town. Police found a plastic bag containing two one hundred dollars notes and one fifty dollar note identified as counterfeit. Grant and another man Robert Young, also of Belize City, were arrested and charged for possession of counterfeit currency. But while at the police station, Grant was identified by George Decassy the owner of South Indian Restaurant in San Ignacio Town. Decassy told police that Grant, who was accompanied by another male person, paid for two Belikin Beers with a counterfeit fifty dollar bill with serial number DE2-7-7-9-6-4 and was given forty-four Belize dollars in change. Shortly after he realized the money was fake.In a second report also made yesterday in the Cayo District, Sarita Tzib reported that on that same morning a woman purchased a bottle of coconut oil at her stall in the Savannah area market. She paid with a fifty dollar note and was given change of thirty-six dollars. She later realized the money was not genuine. In a third incident, thirty-three year old Shawn Gardiner of San Ignacio was at the San Ignacio Police Station when she dropped two one hundred dollar notes with serial numbers DB0-0-8-4-9-7 and two fifty dollar notes bearing serial number DC9-8-5-4-4-5 and DE2-7-7-9-6-4. Police arrested and charged Shawn Gardiner for possession of Counterfeit currency.
