Candy Armstrong is the educational officer on the island. New this year, the San Pedro Educational Office is dedicated to improving all levels of education in San Pedro and Caye Caulker. Tests show that many children's reading and writing skills are below level. To motivate students to read and to provide more learning opportunities on the island, Ms. Armstrong has organized two events in the next months: a Summer Reading Camp in August(August 9-13) and a Literacy Carnival in September(September 8).

The summer camp will serve 75 children struggling with reading and writing, offering both inclusive and specialized activities. Volunteers will assist in a day camp atmosphere to nurture interest in reading as well as develop basic skills. Students will have snacks and lunch daily and be given book bags and learning materials at the end of the camp.

The Literacy Carnival on September 8, 2010 will involve the participation of local schools in creating entertainment and a parade related to reading and learning. The purpose of the carnival is to encourage a culture that inspires children to read and reflects community involvement in literacy.

Ms. Armstrong is asking for volunteers and cash donations to assist in the Reading Camp this summer and sponsorship for the Literacy Parade in the fall. Your contributions will be acknowledged in the media.
