GERMAN COMPANY VISITS BELIZE TO JUMP START CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECT

Day two of a two day national planning workshop on the mitigation of the effects of climate change is underway at the Radisson Fort George Hotel. The focus of the workshop is an initiative called REDD which means 'Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation'. The workshop is being hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment and the Forest Department of Belize. Wilbur Sabido is the Chief Forest Officer in the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Wilbur Sabido; Chief Forest Officer

"Really, when taken into context REDD is really one of the mechanisms that we could actually implement on the ground to reduce the effects of climate change; especially given the vulnerability of Belize as a country with a low lying coastal area and with population centres within those areas. REDD is really one of the mechanisms that we could actually implement on the ground to try and make a contribution as a country, as Belize and as a region to mitigate the effects of climate change. Now, REDD is specific to forest management. In this particular case the Forest Department is the lead agency at this particular point in time to lead the process of developing the activities that need to be executed at the national level that at the end of the day will help to contribute towards maintaining our forests; having the forests continue to generate the benefits to the population at large. At the end the goal is for Belize to have to have the power to continue to make that contribution at the regional and local level to reducing the effects of climate change globally."

Today's workshop is one of the first in the region. The technical support agency the German Technical Cooperation Program is travelling throughout the region to ensure that the entire Central American Region has a common approach to climate change mitigation. Love News spoke to one of the representatives from the German company Lazlo Pancel.

Lazlo Pancel; German Technical Cooperation Program

"We are the technical branch of the German Government so to say and we have been in charge from our German Government this has been decided for developing countries and interestingly the REDD initiatives has come from developing countries so its not an imposed concept but it is coming really in this case especially from Costa Rica. Our role is to be a professional facilitator and together with our colleagues to bring together experiences and try maybe if necessary new mechanisms but through our counterparts or national colleagues because they know very well their countries. What we can do is facilitate an incentive and promote some ideas of exchange and also new approaches maybe."

The project is financed by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany through the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development. According to Sabido the planning process will be carried out over the next three years after which the Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation will be implemented by the participating agencies such as the Forestry Department and NGO's.

Actually, I spoke with one participant who might be the largest logger in Belize who said the forums were great and provided a huge amount of valuable info for the future of his biz. So not a waste of time for him.

Yes Rykat you are right. And this aweful report is just so much gobbledegook. repetitive and incomprehensible.
A pity because climate change is upon us and the need to manage forestry is an important part of that.
This initiative whatever it is, is not going to contribute much if this is how it is communicated.
