Belize-Mexico Exchange

[Linked Image] One significant and encouraging aspect of the friendly relationship that Belize and Mexico enjoy is being staged this month as dozens of students from both sides of the border get ready to take advantage of the Cultural and Educational Cooperation Agreement between both countries.

Twenty five Mexican students arrived in the country today to study English as a Second Language at the University of Belize, while Fifteen Belizean students are heading north to Mexico to pursue studies at Mexico 's National School for Technical Professional Studies.

Press officer at the Mexican Embassy Belize, Marcelino Miranda says the exchange between the two countries is in its eight year and the number of scholarships offered on both sides of the border have increased.

Marcelino Miranda, Press Officer - Mexican Embassy Belize

[Linked Image] "This is base on an agreement with the Government of Mexico and the Government of Belize. How it works is that 25 Mexican students come to Belize to study English and 15 Belizean students go to Mexico in order to get a technical degree. The Mexican students who actually arrive yesterday they are here to study English for 1 year and at the same time the 15 Belizean students who are going to Mexico they are going to spend 2-3 years in order to get this technical degree."

Jim McFadzean
"Are these full scholarships offered to these students by both governments?"

Marcelino Miranda, Press Officer - Mexican Embassy Belize
"Yes. For the Belizeans who are going to Mexico they are going to receive a full scholarship for 2-3 years. At the same time for the 25 Mexican students who are here will have full scholarship for 1 year. This has been very good for students from both sides of the border because they are taking advantage of these opportunities. In the case of Mexico, English is an advantage because it provides an additional skill to Mexican students. For Belizean students they have the opportunity of studying in Mexico at the best technical school in Mexico that is the Conalep and then they have to come back to Belize in order to contribute to the development of Belize. That is the agreement that they sign."

So far, more than One hundred Belizean students have benefited from the tertiary level institution in Mexico , while Two hundred Mexican students have benefited from the English as a second language program offered at the University of Belize .

BELIZEAN STUDENTS RECEIVE MEXICAN SCHOLARSHIPS
August 10, 2010

15 Belizeans students have been awarded scholarships by the Mexican government to study in Mexico. The 15 students will join more than a 100 Belizeans already studying in Mexico at the CONALEP in technical careers. This morning we spoke with Deputy Chief of Staff at the Mexican Embassy, Jorge Luis Hidalgo Castellanos.

Jorge Luis Hidalgo Castellanos; Deputy Chief of Staff, Mexican Embassy

“This is part of the program that Mexico has, the cooperation program with Belize and every year the CONALEP that is an institution of the technical level which translates to the National School of Professional Technical Education gives the opportunity to 15 Belizean students to go to Mexico in order to study for two or three years at technical level program.”

Every year the Mexican Government offers 15 scholarships for Belizeans to study in Mexico at the college level and additionally offers scholarships for Belizeans interested in studying at the University level.

Jorge Luis Hidalgo Castellanos

“The Mexico Belize education cooperation framework, Mexico is offering every year a number of the scholarships and we have to divide this scholarships in two, the first is to study in any university in Mexico not only to get a degree but also to study post graduation., Those that get a scholarship to study in a university in Mexico, when they graduate they get a medical doctors, physicians. And also if they are already doctors in Belize and they have the opportunity to go to Mexico and to study a specialization. The second part of the program is what we call technical level education that means that students from Belize that just finish, in what in Mexico is called secondary school they can go to the CONALEP and study a technical career. After three years of studying in Mexico, they can come back with a technical profession in areas as computer science, telecommunications, also related in tourism, also in the field of engineers at technical level, mechanical, nursing courses and construction.”

Over the years the diplomatic relationship between Belize and Mexico has benefited many Belizean nationals as hundreds have furthered their education and knowledge through scholarships offered. According to Hidalgo, this is only a small way the Mexican Government assists in the formation and development of Belize.

Jorge Luis Hidalgo Castellanos

“I have to stay that the framework of this exchange of the students is an agreement signed by the Belizean side in the Ministry of Education and on the Mexican side by the CONALEP itself. When we talked about handling students, we just want to mention or show the interest between the two governments in enhancing the cooperation in the education field. So we have to differentiate the three levels that the Mexican education program is offering to Belize. If all those are different, we cannot say that we are offering or that the Mexicans are offering a lot of scholarships per year but we believe that according to the number we are offering is enough to contribute to the formation or the training of human resources for the Belizean needs.”

The students leave for Mexico on the 10 and will be studying in the states of Quintana Roo, Michoacan, the State of Mexico, Jalisco and Mexico City.
