Lemonal’s Surprise wins 2010 SMART Harrison Parks cricket champs

History was made in Double Head Cabbage last Saturday when Lemonal’s Surprise CC stunned the defending champs Double Head Cabbage Excellence by wining both finals matches to clinch the 2010 Smart Harrison Parks cricket championship, their first in almost 15 years.

In Game 1 Lemonal’s Surprise had won 104-103 3 weeks before. Excellence had batted first but Man of the Match Mykelt Anthony took 5 wickets for 28 runs and before he was bowled out by Kenny Broaster also scored 5 runs. Only Sylbert Martinez and Keeron Flowers were in double digits for the visitors, and 4 batsmen went duck while 2 more batted only 1 run each. Ian and Brandon Broaster each batted 6 run.

In Lemonal’s turn at bat, Kenny Broaster took four wickets and Orson “Big Dawg” Flowers took another three wickets for Excellence, but this did not stop Warren Anthony from batting 32 runs before Ian Broaster bowled him out and Shannon Smith score 24 runs to remain not out; his final four put them over the top 104-103.

When Game 2 started in Double Head on July 17, the match was interrupted by rains after only 16 overs with only 2 men out. Mykelt Anthony took the first wicket for zero runs, but his partner Keenon Flowers batted 34 runs before he was given Leg Before Wicket on a ball bowled by Edward Bull.

When it continued on July 24, Excellence had batted 219 runs all out, before the rains fell again. Sylbert Martinez batted 48 runs before he was caught, and Percy Flowers scored 15 runs before he too was caught on a ball bowled by Mykelt Anthony. Kenny Broaster batted one six before Mykelt Anthony bowled him out. Orson “Big Dawg” batted 31 runs before he was bowled out by Orlando Banner. Burke Howard scored 12 runs before he was stumped and Brandon Broaster hit 12 runs before he was give LBW. Emmanuel Mcfadzean batted 15 runs before he was stumped on a ball from Orlando Banner and Eworth Nicholas scored 19 runs remaining not out, while Percival Flowers had scored 2 runs before he was run out.

In Lemonal’s turn at bat, Kenny Broaster took the 1st wicket for zero runs, but Man of the Match Herbert Banner whopped 5 sixes and 7 fours to score 74 runs before he was caught. Orlando Banner scored 60 runs before he was bowled out.

Mykelt Anthony scored 19 runs before he was bowled out by Eworth Nicholas, and Excellence captain Percival Flowers took the next wicket for one run. Edward Bull batted 5 sixes to score 31 runs before he was caught by Kenny Broaster. Percival Flowers took the next wicket for 2 runs, and Orson Flowers took the next wicket for zero runs.

It fell to national team player Warren Anthony, to hit 2 fours and a winning final six to give the Lemonal Eleven the 220-219 championship win.

An exhibition match will be scheduled between the new champions and an all star selection at which trophies will be awarded.

Surprise CC wins 2010 SMART Harrison Parks Cricket Championship

The Surprise Cricket club of Lemonal Village won the 2010 Smart Harrison Parks cricket championship, its first national title in over a decade by winning both games of the finals over the three-times national champions, Excellence CC in Double Head Cabbage, on Saturday, July 31.

Excellence had batted 219 runs when its batters completed their innings in the second match, which was interrupted twice by rain. Lemonal’s Mykelt Anthony had dismissed the opening batsman for zero runs, but his partner Keenon Flowers hit a six and six boundaries to score 34 runs before he was given LBW on a ball from Edward Bull.

Sylbert Martinez entered to hit two sixes and five boundaries for 48 runs before he was caught on a ball from Andrew Banner, and Percy Flowers entered to hit two boundaries and score 15 runs before he was caught on a ball from Mykelt Anthony. Kenny Broaster entered to hit a single six before he too fell victim to Mykelt’s bowling.

Orson “Big Dawg” Flowers entered to hit a string of four sixes for 31 runs before Orlando Banner bowled him out.

Burke Howard would hits six and a single boundary to score 12 runs before he was stumped. Wicket keeper Brandon Broaster hit two sixes for 12 runs before he was give LBW on a ball from Lawrence Banner.

The star of last year’s championship victory, Emmanuel Mcfadzean, hit only a six and a boundary b was stumped on a ball from Orlando Banner. Eworth Nicholas had managed two sixes and two boundaries for 19 runs remaining not out, while Percival Flowers scored only two runs before he was run out.

Excellence had scored a quite respectable 219 runs, when the rains came, delaying the Lemonal eleven’s innings to the following week.

When Surprise came to bat, Kenny Broaster dismissed one of the opening batsmen for zero runs, but his partner, 16-year-old Herbert Banner walloped five sixes and seven boundaries to score 74 runs before he was caught. Orlando Banner would partner with him hitting four sixes and six boundaries to score another 60 runs before Orson “Big Dawg” Flowers bowled him out.

Mykelt Anthony hit two sixes and a boundary to score 19 runs before Eworth Nicholas bowled him out and Excellence captain Percival Flowers would dismiss the next batsman for one run.

Enter Edward Bull to hit five sixes for 31 runs before Keeran Flowers got him to pop up for the catch by Kenny Broaster. Percival Flowers took the next wicket for two runs, and Orson Flowers dismissed the next batsman for zero runs.

But then here comes the redoubtable Warren Anthony, who has been tapped several times for the Belize national team. His two fours and his final six put Surprise over the top 220-219 to win the championship in dramatic fashion.

Surprise had also won the first match of the series 104 to 103 in Lemonal three weeks before. Young Mykelt Anthony was the Man of the Match taking six wickets for 28 runs, also hitting five runs before Kenny Broaster bowled him out. Alas for Excellence, only Sylbert Martinez and Keeron Flowers were in double digits. Four batsmen scored nary a run, while two scored only one run each, while brothers Ian Brandon Broaster batted six runs each.

When Surprise came to bat Kenny Broaster took four wickets and Orson “Big Dawg” Flowers took another three wickets, but Warren Anthony hit a respectable five boundaries for 32 runs before he fell to Ian Broaster’s bowling and Shannon Smith hit two sixes and two boundaries to score 24 runs and remain not out; his final four put Surprise over the top 104-103.
