When I arrived at Belize in January, I decided not to pay $17.50 to get to town and had a pleasant half hour stroll to the highway. There I sipped a beer at a little store while waiting for a bus, which cost $1.25 US. Of course, I travel lightly, but it isn't that much of a walk at around two miles. I did the same coming back, but the bus ride was with another company and was even cheaper.

You don't have to spend outrageous sums to get into town.

I do this also, but for first timer Belize travelers, I feel it would be a stretch, carrying luggage and such. Also having to know where to get off. You can just go all the way to the bus station, but again I wouldn't recommend that "adventure" to a first timer either. Take a taxi! You'll hear some great stories!

Well, that is the better option for those with a lot of unneeded luggage and money. The best option for someone like that who is traveling alone or with only one person would be to see if anyone else wants to share a ride.

With me, that would have been a stretch. I would have had to wait until the others got their luggage off the carousel and then hoped that they wanted to share a ride. As it was, I didn't feel like hanging around with my carry on bag. So I headed off.

However, I don't think that approach is beyond the abilities a "first timer" who travels lightly and has some sense of adventure.

The official language is English and most people will sort of understand one's accent. People who hang onto their wallet and have a Lonely Planet guide and its maps should do all right in getting to a boat to the cayes.
