All of you planning to go to AC, I hope you have a wonderful time. Just returned after 8 relaxing days. The reef is beautiful, the people friendly and happy, the children delightful and the food interesting and varied.

Stayed at Caribbean Villas, can't say enough about how accommodating Will and Susan and their staff are. Check out their pier--they're creating a nice snorkeling habitat and there are seahorses there...

Ate at Elvis, Fido's, Celis, Los Cocos (VERY LOCAL FLAVOR but my personal favorite), Caliente, Capricorn, Rubies, Sweet Basil, Cannibals, Jambel's Jerk Pit and El Patio. Thought El Patio was mediocre, all other places were quite enjoyable. I'm a food snob but how can you beat caught that day grilled snapper and rice and beans? Save your big bucks for $200 meals in Paris that will leave you hungry. Simple healthy food served with a smile....

If they have garlic bread at La Popular Bakery, don't pass it up. I could eat the stuff for breakfast.

Divers on my trip found Amigos del Mar a great dive operation with emphasis on safety and reef conservation. I loved snorkeling with Alfonse whose trips were like watching the Discovery Channel. That guy knows every type of fish and coral in the area. I've snorkeled many many reefs in my time--Hol Chan and Mexico Rocks are two of the most beautiful coral forests I've seen. Try a night snorkel with Alfonse at Hol Chan. Really fun.

The only negative of the whole trip was the Pica Pica's--varying descriptions but I believe they are thimble jelly fish larva typical around this time of the year. They can get your neck and even under your bathing suit. I never felt any stinging sensation but the skin irritation is a lot like mosquito bites--pretty darn itchy and uncomfortable. Put sunscreen EVERYWHERE, especially where the sun don't shine. They seem to slide off that way, and maybe you won't be affected as badly as I was. Bring some cortisone spray and benedryl cream just in case....it really helps. Please don't let this keep you out of the water if you snorkel or dive!!!! If you're experienced in this regard, I'm sure you've encountered similar conditions (I did in La Paz)and I wouldn't have passed up seeing what I did!!!!

Most of all, have several Belikins and enjoy yourself!

My friends arrived at Caribbean Villas on the 4th! Maybe you met them! I warned her about the pica pica, which she had not heard of, so I am really hoping that they have not been affected. They have two kids who will be in the water, too (12 and 10). I think that would put a real cloud over the vacation if you had that itching and burning, and were afraid to get back in the water. Crossing my fingers that they are having a great time.

Thanks for the report. It sounds like you enjoyed yourself!

Donna, There was very recently a very thorough discussion of pica pica, with good suggestions as to what it is, how to avoid it, and what to do if you get it. Do a search, and you should find it. It was within the last two weeks.

God, I really need a vacation from the kids.
I have to admit here, the first time I saw the post on Pica Pica, I didn't read it. My son was addicted to some little Pokemon character named Pica Choo. Whenever the little character gets excited it says... "Pica! Pica!" I must have heard it a million times until I thought I would scream!!! LOL [Linked Image]
Boy was I wrong!!!!

I have had the joy of Pica Pica in my bikini several times and therefore I just ordered a product called Safe Sea. Here is the info:
To order call 800-646-7875 or go to ct601.lifestylesdirect.com and order it.
I ordered the SPF 15 and No SPF version.
It is not cheap $12.95 per bottle but hopefully it will work. Suposed to prevent against sting of sea lice= Pica Pica, sea nettle, most jellyfish and coral. Make sure you apply it in the areas that will be inside your bathing/wet suite and under your hair line on the back of your neck. This is where the Pica Pica get's trapped mostly. Debbie! Pica Pica should be at it's worst right now. By the time we get there second week of June it probably will be gone because the larva will be adult jelly by than. And the adults are no problem anymore!
