Hi everyone!
we are a couple coming from Finland to Belize 3rd January for a week. We are interested in maya ruins (surprise!), nature, people, etc. Any tips for us as Belize is an unknown territory for us?
There are no tours from Finland to Belize so we have to organize things via internet. Flights take most of our budget, but we'd like to stay somewhere with normal comforts (private bathroom, a/c). Is San Pedro the best place to stay for maya tours? Are the tours easily organised on the spot?

Best place for Mayan tours and jungle nature, is staying on the mainland. You should be able to book your tours upon arrival. There are a couple of people that post here on the board that could probably help you directly over the internet with your accommodations, tour bookings and great ideas in general. San Pedro is great if you want a beach/Caribbean base for your holiday and want to visit the Jungle and ruins on day trips - at least three ruins and jungle trips are offered as day trips from San Pedro. If the jungle is your priority the Cayo region may be your best option with several ruins and lots of jungle and Jungle Lodges. Perhaps even a few days at both destinations is worth considering as travel is easy and a half day will get you from one to the other. Lots and lots of info on this web site if you look through all the pages. Have fun.

I would recommend splitting the trip up and spending part on the mainland for the ruins, caves, waterfalls, local culture, etc and part on one of the cayes or coasts for the beach, snorkeling, diving, water sports, nightlife, etc. You get a much fuller experience of the country this way. Lots of great hotels in both locations for any budget. You can arrange tours in advance or when you get there. Feel free to email me if you'd like more [email protected]

Leena, I understood you to say that your budget for spending on accommodations and tours is smaller because the cost of the flights took so much of your vacation budget.

That is the reason I recommend that you do your Mayan tours and adventures from the mainland. Trying to do them from the island costs much more due to the added time and expense of travel to get from the island to the mainland and back. Also, some of the best things to do take all day just for the inland portion and so would require at least one overnight stay on the mainland anyway.

That's why Barb's advice is good. First stay inland and enjoy the Mayan tours and adventures. Then, if you have extra time, go to the island for island style.

The two parts of our culture-Beach Life and Jungle ruins- are very different. It is much cheaper for basic hotels and other costs away from the beach.

Hi everyone
thanks for the advice. I'm still surfing and can't make up my mind. What does one get for 2900 US$ for two for 7 days ? I'd just love to experience the both, jungle, maya ruins and the beach? How does one move from one place to another in Belize? Let's say from San Ignacio to Placencia? Driving wasn't much recommended beacause of the bad roads and expensive rentals?

The main hywys are all paved with good signage and the Placencia road is recently completed and a masterpiece of roadwork. Most sites and attractions are off the main roads and are usally on bumpy and dusty or bumby and muddy roads. Get a 4wd. Renting a car will save you $ on road transfers and for most tours. Rental rates here are higher due to duty import costs, for parts, etc. Driving is safe and easy. I would get to your destination before dark if you are not familier with the roads or where you are going. But people are friendly and helpful if you need directions.

Many people use the bus system to travel around, but that's not always the best for getting to some places off the main highways.

Another more expensive option is one of the transfer services.

If you want to take your time and make a lot of stops along the way, then a rental car might be best. The roads are in good condition, as previously stated.

Here's a site with a bit of transportation information:

This is a link to car rental prices. We already used this service and were absolutely satisfied: http://www.crystal-belize.com/rentals.html
