Mexico - Belize Hails President Calderón's Leadership

Prime Minister of Belize, Dean O. Barrow, hailed President Felipe Calderón's leadership in Federal Government's fight to restore safety in the country.

"In the context of security, I must take advantage of this opportunity to congratulate Mexico, under President Calderón's leadership, on the tireless battle it has fought, at such a great human and material cost, against the drug trafficking cartels.

Mr. President, you have become a sort of force of nature in your campaign to provide security for all Mexicans. You are undoubtedly an inspiration for our region and the world," he said.

At the Esplanade of the Monument to Francisco I. Madero, at Los Pinos, President Felipe Calderón welcomed the Prime Minister of Belize, currently on an official visit to Mexico.

"On the question of our border, the modern era has exacerbated the problems caused by the illegal trafficking of drugs, weapons and human beings. But it is precisely neighborliness, which I referred to, that has enabled us to develop solid schemes to combat trans-border crime," he said.

For his part, the Mexican president, accompanied by his wife, Margarita Zavala, confirmed the friendship linking Mexico and Belize, and highlighted the reinforcement of the strategic relationship they have built over the years.

"On the basis of neighborliness, marked by collaboration and understanding, we have consolidated a relationship full of economic and social opportunities.

In addition to friendship and cooperation, in recent years, we are strengthened our economic exchange. In the last decade alone, bilateral trade doubled from USD 52 to USD 104 million USD in 2009," he said.

President Calderón said that Mexico operates on the premise that the development of Mesoamerican peoples must be shared development. As a result, Mexico promotes the integration and transformation of the region, through works that modernize road, electricity and telecommunications links between the two countries.

"Mexico was, I am proud to say, the first country to establish diplomatic relations with Belize, immediately after the declaration of its Independence on 21 September 1981.

Nowadays, just as it did 29 years ago, Belize knows that it has the friendship and support of Mexicans to build a future of well-being and prosperity together for the benefit of our peoples," he said.

PM Barrow in Mexico

Prime Minister Dean Barrow is on an official visit to Mexico. The government of Belize has not provided any details of his trip - but the Mexican government has posted video and photographs on their website.

We got this from the official welcome by President Felipe Calderon:.

President Felipe Calderon
"It is an honor for me to receive the Prime Minister of a country which is so close in geography as well as in the affection of all Mexicans. Your visit is of the highest significance for us because it coincides with the year in which we celebrate the bi-centennial of our Independence and the centennial of the Mexican revolution. Your presence in Mexico constitutes a great opportunity to ratify the very affection of friendship that unites our people and to strengthen strategic relationship we have built."

"Aside from friendship and cooperation in recent years we have strengthen our economic exchanges. Only this last decade bilateral trade double from 52 to 104 million dollars in 2009."

"I am sure that the talks we will be holding through this visit shall give a new projection to our 2 countries trade and investments thus, we have undertaking works to modernizing the roads, electric and telecommunications connection between our nations. Mr. Prime Minister and I say this with great pride that Mexico was the first country to establish diplomatic relations with Belize immediately after the proclamation of its Independence on September 21st, 1981. Belize knows it has the friendship and support of all Mexicans to jointly build a future of wellbeing and prosperity for the benefit of our people."

The delegation includes Education Minister Patrick Faber, Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, Sir Manuel Esquivel, CEO in the Ministry of Finance Audrey Wallace and other senior government officials.

PM Vehicle "Wet"

And while the Prime Minister is in Mexico - his Toyota Land Cruiser reportedly took a dip near his home yesterday morning around 9:00. Reports say the vehicle was in the sea - but we stress we could not confirm that and saw no indication of it along the waterfront.

We do know that when our team arrived on the scene the vehicle was dripping with water from all over and damage to the front and back fender, specifically scratch marks could be seen. As soon as we showed up his driver John Wilthsire sped off. And while he left us in the dust, a tell tale wet spot was left on the street..
