SAN PEDRO RESIDENTS HOST MASS OF THANKSGIVING FOR MARIA ANTONIA PLAZA GOMEZ

November 09, 2010

Exactly a week after Spanish Flight attendant was found dead on Ambergris Caye, the community came out in a mass of thanksgiving to celebrate her life. Jorge Aldana was there and filed the following report.

Jorge Aldana Reporting

Community activists, well known public figures, local politicians, hotel owners, members of the Maya Island Air staff, students and teacher, local islanders and even the members of the Belize Police Department revisited the area where the body of Maria Antonia Plaza Gomez was found murdered exactly a week ago. The community members united for a mass of thanksgiving for the life of 37 year old Spanish National. The event was organized by Lady Dixie Bowen, wife of the late Sir Barry Bowen. In speaking at the event, Lady Bowen stated that she is moved by the tragedy and sympathizes with the family even more so since just 9 months ago she lost her husband. Lady Bowen recollected on the life of Plaza Gomez and said that her short live life on Ambergris Caye was one of fun. She said that even though the community is shaken by the usual murder, the event is clearly a demonstration that the Plaza Gomez family is not alone in their pain. In speaking to Love News, local island resident Colette Kase said that the crime is an upset to the community; a community that is known to be peaceful. While she pointed that the residents alike its visitors should not feel deprive of walking freely along the beach, she caution and called on the political leaders to address the matter with urgency. While she applauded the efforts of the general public for showing their cooperation toward the work of the Police to help solve Plaza Gomez's crime, she said that it is important that we send one single message to the family; a message that as a community the islanders cares about them and will leave no stone unturned. The mass of thanksgiving lasted shortly after an hour as those in attendance laid flowers or lit a candle near a pictured that was placed on the alter which was put next to the yard where Gomez was found. The mass of thanksgiving was officiated by Father Daniel Nunez of the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church.  And while the community of San Pedro mourns the death of one of their tourist, Police in San Pedro has not made any formal arrest and the Department continues to plea to the community for any lead that would help them bring some closure to the murder case. A reward of $6500 is being offered in total by several sectors of the San Pedro community for any information that can lead to the successful arrest of the person or person involved in Plaza Gomez's murder.
