BATTLE OF THE DRUM SECRETARIAT HOLDS TRANSLATION CONTEST

Designed to test the participants' ability to translate different words, phrases and proverbs from English to Garifuna and as part of its Garifuna Cultural Retrieval Initiative, the Battle of the Drums Secretariat of Punta Gorda held its third translation contest yesterday. 13 students participated in this year's contest from schools including St. Peter Claver, Bethel 7th Day Adventist, Punta Gorda Methodist, Benedict RC, and Barranco's St. Joseph RC Schools. After two hours of intense competition Germina Cabelleros from St. Peter Claver captured first place, Kiari Mejia of Punta Gorda Methodist School took second place while Mike Ramirez of St. Joseph RC was third. Winners took home credit union savings accounts ranging from two hundred to a hundred dollars. In related news, the Battle of the Drums Secretariat donated a pair of Garifuna Drums to St. Benedict RC School today to assist them in starting their Garifuna drumming and singing lessons as part of the Drumming in Schools program. Through the program, students' drumming and singing talent, ability and skill is enhanced and supported.
