just got off the phone with Betsy from St Matthews, who has spoken to the a representative for the state dept.

who has spoken to Johnny Grief Jr. on the island.

No bad injuries.
Most of the damage os on the west side.
An Administrator of the school has done a walk thru of the school and its intact.

full statement to follow, not a whole lot more than that.

But if the school is ok, then probably lots of the island is ok.

and we cry again and bless our lucky stars that no one was hurt.

Marty

=================
Rick Dowell, with the US State Department Emergency Evacuation Center, reported to us that David Chang with the US Consulate office in Belize has been in communication with John Grief, Jr. of Tropicaire. Mr. Grief indicates he has been in contact with representatives on Ambergris Caye as well as administrators of St. Matthew's University School of Medicine. He stated there were no reports of medical emergencies or fatalities on Ambergris Caye. An administrator of St. Matthew's University reported that all campus buildings appear to be intact.

Most damage observed thus far was apparently confined to the Western side of the island.

We will continue to update this information as it is available to us.

Keith update at 7:30 pm EST Monday Oct 2, 2000

Center of circulation is now two thirds across the Yucatan,
approaching Bay of Carmen. The storm system in the SE quadrant hovering
over Belize is now being dragged into the Peten. Only a 10 mile section
of this storm system is still over coastal waters in Belize. Caye
Caulker and San Pedro should have a star lit night. Clear skies. Low
winds less than 30 mph, more like 15 to 20 mph.
Northern Belize still gets rain in the Corozal and Orange Walk districts.

It is over folks! Contact with Caye Caulker tomorrow if the GOB gets
help and communication out there very early. They could make a night
run, it has calmed down so much. San Pedro through Ham Radio has managed
to reassure lots of people about the safety of loved ones. Still no communication with Caye Caulker.

Belize City flooded, but that should run out of town by daylight in the
morning.
