I know that there are certain items you can ship down here without a duty (such as books), and I've also heard that you can do the same with a laptop. Is that true of desktops as well? Is there anywhere online to see what can be sent duty-free?

Thanks!

Yes on the "duty-free" status of computers and books.

Remember though, "duty-free" does not mean "tax-free".
You will still need to pay 12.5% sales tax on the computer and on the cost of shipping. There may be an environmental tax as well (not sure on that - if so, it is around 2%).

Laptops are frequently carried in by travelers as part of their personal gear and as such they usually don't get taxed at all. Of course this would mean that you are bringing only one, it's not still in the box and it's really yours.

I'm actually interested in getting a desktop computer down here--which means either shipping it or figuring out a way to safely check it on the airplane.

All computers are duty-free, or just laptops?

All computers are Duty Free but not peripherals. Tax as above of 12.5% + 1.5% and on purchase price and ALL shipping eg if PC is shipped from TX to FL. that gets taxed as well as the FL to Bz shipping.

Buying locally and bring data on external drive or downloading it via internet might be worth considering.

A new desktop is usually well packaged, and can be checked safely as luggage when you fly in.

I think I'll probably go with Diane's suggestion and just check the computer in its original packaging.

Thanks for the help!

Or just buy it locally - I usually purchase from Fultec in Belize City as they have a good range of machines, reasonable prices and great tech support when (I say when not if!) it goes wrong in the salt air. You will save yourself the aggravation and support the local economy!
