Hi:

I've read you can go to any bank on AC and get cash on your Visa. Is this cash from your bank account? Or a cash advance on your Visa? Sorry, but I've never done this, and don't want to come home and find out I've got to pay 18.5% interest on money I took out..I'm bringing enough cash/T. cheques I should be fine, but I'd like to feel I've got a backup source just in case..

Thanks!

It depends if your card is a true credit card or debit card linked to your checking account. It also depends on your bank/ card issuer. I did a cash advance on my Visa debit which is linked to my checking account and there was no fee from my bank. Careful though as the banks in Belize charge a fee to advance the cash regardless of the type of card. It can be up to 10%. There is also a fee to cash traveler's checks at the bank. Rather nominal but a fee nonetheless. Cash them at retailers when paying for goods or services. Also look at the other post on the board using the search function.

Robert - thank you for the information. I will check with my card issuer to see if they can help answer my questions.

You will need your passport when you draw from your card. I went to Atlantic Bank on CC, and ScotiaBank everywhere else, both charged me $3BZ. Beware the Bank at the airport! They charged me $15! VISA charged me one time fee of $2 at the end of the month (not for each transaction). I find this simpler than using traveller's cheques.

Cinca - thank you for the info. I'll definitely avoid the bank at the airport.
RobertE - actually, I'm leaving in a few days (May 27th). Looks like I won't catch you..thanks again for your help. I talked to my bank and have figured out a way to avoid racking up interest charges on my c. card.
