I have been going to Isla Mujeres for years and thought I would split my upcoming trip (end of January) up between there and San Pedro. Thinking we will be taking the bus down to Chetumal and then the ferry out to San Pedro. I was wondering if it is a good/bad idea to wing it and just find a hotel once we arrive (2 couples)? Not looking for anything fancy..just clean and safe...preferably close to town..around $100.00 or less? Any other information for a first timer would be great. I will have to spend a some time looking through other posts.

Paradise Villas. Lush landscaping, pool, close to town but private.

Make reservations - the really good spaces will be either full or hard to find at 5 pm when your boat gets to town. You will be hunting around a place you don't know just before dark - best to have a soft landing in a pre-arranged, nice place.

I'd book ahead too, certainly the first night due to Dianes point on arrival time which is often later 6pm by the time you clear immigration & customs and dark. You're in the mid range price wise and these tend to fill up quickest and end of January is pretty busy.

South of town, Banana Beach is always a good choice and usually in the $100 range....

On the North side, AkBol is very nice and reasonably priced as well.

Jerry Jeff's Camp Gonzo will be going on the 23rd to the 6th. That's about 200 people each week that will be on the island. For that reason I'd say booking in advance would be a good idea.
