My wife and I are considering retiring on Ambergris Caye and will be coming out for a two weeks to have a look around. I know that I can drive using my Canadian license and will likely get a Belize license when/if we move there. My wife doesn't drive here in Canada and therfore doesn't have a drivers license. How big a deal will it be for her to get a license to drive a golf cart? Will she have to do a written test and a road test as we do here in Canada?

Thanks.............Peter

There is a driving test, but I doubt it is anything like one in Canada!! Providing she can steer in a straight line without hitting a cyclist she will probably pass the "practical" and the written test is based on about 20 questions that they give you to "study" a week prior to taking it.

The problem is that it takes much longer than two weeks to get a Belize Drivers License.....or at least it used to.

It's about a hundred questions, but anybody can pass it.

I am pretty sure the questions are multiple choice. And there used to be a load of questions that involved one way streets in Belize city!

I believe that these days you can actually get a Belize drivers license that is limited to golf cart driving only.

If you wife has never had a license before she will need to make the application for a learners permit and then have that permit for 30 days before she qualifies to take the test. (This is how it was a few years ago when my daughter got her license.)

Yes I think if she gets a learners permit for a golf cart she will be fine. What about a boat license?

Will my Canadian boat license be valid or will I have to re do it?

For a boat license you will have to write the test and do a practical, fairly easy.
