A nineteen year old is hospitalized at the KHMH after receiving burns to his back yesterday on San Pedro.

"A teenager living in San Pedro remains hospitalized after he was burned by one of his family members. The person is 19 year old Rene Esteven Martinez of a San Pablo Area Address of San Pedro Town. According to a family member, Martinez was at his grandmother's house in the San Pablo Area when a female cousin threw kerosene over Martinez and set him ablaze sometime around 3:45 on Tuesday afternoon. Martinez was rushed to the San Pedro Poli-Clinic for treatment. According to Dr. Otto Rodriguez from the San Pedro Poly-clinic, Martinez was observed with 2nd degree burns to 40 percent of his body and as a result was airlifted by a helicopter from the Belize Emergency Response Team. In speaking to family members, Love News understands that Martinez was washing dishes inside the kitchen when his 25 year old cousin, namely Elijia Ecien Kelly, threw kerosene over Martinez. According to Police the incident arose from a fierce struggle over a television that Martinez had previously removed from the living room. While inside the kitchen, Kelly then managed to light Martinez on fire after which a friend of Martinez, who was inside watching television at the time of the incident, assisted with putting out the fired. The friend, along with an uncle of Martinez, namely Joseph Elijio, managed to rush Martinez to the poly-clinic. According to a sibling of Kelly, while both cousins are close, they were always involved in quarrels. Kelly's sibling explained that it is not the first time that Elijia had threatened to kill Martinez. The 19 year old Martinez remains hospitalized at the KHMH in critical condition with burns to his back. Police has since detained Kelly pending charges for attempt murder."
