The 33rd National Belize Lions Zone 59 convention took place in Belmopan from Friday, April 8th to Sunday April 10th under the theme "Lions; Many faces, many races, one goal - Service." The three-day convention started with an official opening ceremony on Friday night where the conventioneers were greeting by both the Lions President of Belmopan Amira Santos and the Convention Chairman Dr Moises Cal.
In speaking at the event Dr. Cal dedicated the convention to long standing Belmopan club member Lion Justo Castillo. The keynote speaker was US Ambassador to Belize His Excellency Vinai Thummalapally who congratulated the Lions Organization for their outstanding work in Belize. Following the official opening ceremony, conventioneers and invited guests enjoyed the hospitality booths which offered food and drinks typical of the club's region.
On day two of the convention, a new Zone Chairman and a new Zone Queen was elected. The New Zone Chairman is Lion Dr. Glenford Espadas and he was chosen in an uncontested election. Espadas, who is a dentist by profession, has served as the President of the Belize City Lions Club, a director on the Board and on Saturday moved up to be the Zone Chairman. Beside Espandas, other elected Zone members include Rick Castillo as Vice Chairman, Marisol Melhado as Secretary, Salvador Allas as Treasure and Dr. Christopher Bennett as Advisor. Also chosen on Saturday night was a new Zone Queen. Chancae Guy of the Belmopan Lions Club will now succeed Ivy Alamilla representing the San Pedro Lions Club. Like the New Zone Chairman, the Zone Queen will officially take over the Zone's responsibility at the beginning of the New Lions Fiscal Year which starts on July 1st.
As part of the convention, a resolution was passed for all Clubs to raise as much money within 90 days to assist victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami; monies that the Zone will pass on to Lions International.
