Press Release – SAGA Humane Society – April 27, 2011 - Katia Marin and Heidi Sowards, two of SAGA’s Directors attended the 2011 Caribbean Animal Welfare Conference in San Juan Puerto Rico. April 3rd - 5th.
Held from April 3rd through the 5th, the three day conference included different types of humane societies, shelters and rescue groups coming together to talk and share ideas about the great work that they do. There were all kinds of international speakers from St. Thomas, Bahamas and even the Belize Society. Clara Lee Arnold from the Hopkins Humane Society spoke about the changes that have happened in Hopkins since they started bringing vet teams to hold spay and neuter clinics. The topics included ‘Animal Capture and Handling Techniques’, ‘Surveying Roaming Dogs’ Population and Increasing Adoptions’, and ‘Marketing and Fundraising Strategies’, just to mention a few. SAGA would like to thank Clara Lee for donating jewelry, which she and her husband make themselves out of shells.

Katia and SAGA Volunteer Heather Beck also attended the International Association of Canine Professional (IACP) conference in San Diego April 7th - 9th which included speakers Wendy Volhard, Joel Silverman, Jeff King and the main speaker Cesar Millan. Following the Conference the two volunteered their time at Best Friends Animal Society to work on some dogs at Dog Town Sanctuary. Dog Town is home to dogs rescued after the devastating Hurricane Katrina, and it also houses Michael Vick’s dogs.

We hope Katia brings Cesar Millan over to San Pedro. This would be a great benefit for SAGA and whole community.

Kathy and Heidi are wonderful international representatives for SAGA. The community should be very proud of them.

His techniques work on dogs that others would have put down. Is it the best training style? Certainly not in every case. Is animal behaviorism an exact science? Absolutely not. Does reward-based training work better? Oftentimes yes, especially for puppies. But Cesar doesn't train puppies. He works on dogs that have been mis-trained by ignorant owners.

I do object when the word "inhumane" is applied to the cruel treatment of animals.

"No beast so fierce but knows some touch of pity.

But I know none, and therefore am no beast."

C2C. So um what do all the qualified and highly trained dog trainers and behaviourists do? They work with problem dogs - mostly adult dogs. Many animal welfare organisations - of which many have campaigned to have Cesar Millan's programme removed from broadcasting - also employ full time behaviourists to work with problem adult dogs. What Cesar does is not science or magic and the vast majority of animal professionals produce better and more long lasting results without resorting to myths, coercion, force or dangerous methods. The only good thing that has come out of this for the profession is that business has picked up amongst those who have watched the TV programme, tried it at home or even worse, gone to a 'cowboy' trainer who thinks he is Cesar Millan and had their dog so badly damaged that they have to pay through the nose to have it put right by people who are qualified and trained to do so.

Every time if people are successfully as Cesar Millan, there are others getting jealous because they do the same thing, without there own TV show.

Animal behaviorism is not a exact science and Cesar saved many problem Dogs from a life back in a animal shelter or even to be lied down (killed).

By the way, not all what is written in the internet is based on facts... and as we all know from the Bible, the very polite good, was the one created the evil. Every time you search for it, you will always find something negative.

There's more than one way to skin a cat...or train a dog. Bad trainers (using many different 'styles') abound.
One of the articles discounted the "pack theory". Pure BS. the first thing stray dogs do is pack up. Anyone with more than one dog (or chicken) sees the pecking order quite plainly. I don't profess he is a perfect trainer but there is a lot of right in what Cesar does and advocates.

I'm not sure anyone claims that EVERYTHING Cesar does is wrong - people just object to some of his methods which they consider cruel and/or ineffective in the long run as well as some baseless claims he makes.

And for anyone who believes that having a TV program validates anything about a man or his work I have a bridge in NY to sell. I mean who are you going to trust when it comes to, for example, physics? Roadrunner or a physicist who doesn't have his own TV show?
