From Josh Berman:I'm a travel writer, author of MOON BELIZE, and I'm inviting you to participate in my next book. Where are you planning to travel in 2012, THE YEAR OF THE MAYA? Are you going to the source of the Maya prophecy -- to Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, or Mexico? What do you expect to see and experience during the year that the ancient Maya's 5,125-year Long Count calendar clicks over?
That's what will happen on December 21, 2012. There are sure to be massive gatherings at Palenque, Tikal, Xunantunich... where else? I just saw a Guatemalan elder speak in Denver, Colorado. He said "Don't be afraid! The Maya community does NOT interpret the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012 to mean the end of the world, but rather that we are entering a period of Mayan Energies called the '6 Knots' of energy vortexes." Then he invited me to his village, Coban, where they are building a school and offer an herbal medicine workshop for visitors.
There are many ideas out there about the signficance of "the most intriguing date in history," but make no mistake: La Ruta Maya will rule in 2012. Are you planning any 2012-specific tour packages? 2012/calendar-related events, ceremonies, etc.? I'm looking for big and little events across the Yucatan, Chiapas, Guatemala, Belize, Copan, wherever things are going to happen. This is for a book to be published in fall 2011. I'd love to feature Maya village community-based tourism projects in addition to the government-sponsored rutas and official calendars.
