The San Pedro Saca Chispas football field was the venue for the first ever San Pedro Softball Cup (SPSC). Hosted and organized by the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC), three teams representing three regions of the country, North, South and Central Region, converged at the field for the three day competition.
With the ending of this year's High School National Softball Tournament (HSNST), the top teams were more than happy for another chance to face off. Representing the southern region and National Sub-Champions, was Independence High School (IHS); from Central Region and 2011's HSNST Champions, the Belmopan Comprehensive School (BCS) represented; and representing Belize Northern Region was our very own, San Pedro High (SPH). Games commenced on Friday April 29th and culminated on Sunday May 1st.
A total of eight games were played, at the end of which the BCS emerged the champions. Scores for the games are as follows. In the Double Round Robin: six games were played. In the section of the tournament, each team faced off twice. Scores were as follows: Game G1 - BCS defeated SPH 14 to 9; G2 - IHS defeated SPH 15 to 14; G3 - IHS defeated BCS 5 to 2; G4 - BCS defeated SPH 18 to 8, G5 - IHS defeated SPH 10 to 9 and G6 saw BCS defeating IHS 11 to 4.
At the end of the Double Round Robin, BCS was in first place, followed by IHS and SPH. At this point, BCS automatically moved on to the championship round, with HIS and SPH fighting it out for a chance to compete against BHS for 1st and 2nd place. In the semi-final game SPH squared off against HIS with a very marginal win of 9 to 8, placing them in the Grand Finals.
Starting at 1:00pm on Sunday Afternoon, the Championship Game was filled with tension and excitement; however at the end, BCS defeated SPHS by a whopping 9 points with a score of 12 to 3.
At the end of the tournament, trophies and medals were issued to both first and second place winners. Apart from trophies and medals, eight individual awards were issued.
Individual Awards were as follows: Most Wins - Keenan Moguel of HIS; Most Strikeouts - Jose Hernandez of Belmopan Comprehensive; Most Valuable Player (MVP) - Akeem Watters of Belmopan Comprehensive; Most Homeruns - Akeem Watters of Belmopan Comprehensive; Best Outfield - Dwayne Rudon of IHS; Best Infield - Alex Roache of SPHS; Most Runs Batted In - Charles Richards of SPHS and for the Best Batting Average, which went to Charles Richards of SPHS.
