The Tourism Report Quarterly Findings

As the first quarter of 2011 closes, Belizeís tourism sector is seeing positive indications that industry recovery is finally underway. The overnight sector, which witnessed the largest overall growth in January, seems to be trending with global predictions for 2011 by the United World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). As for the cruise sector, early setbacks are attributed to external factors but increased ship calls are expected to commence in late 2011. The following is a full report on airline, overnight and cruise arrivals.

Overnight Tourist Arrivals
From January to February 2011, there were 800 additional overnight visitors to Belize, as compared to the same time last year. This represents a 2% increase in the overnight sector for January and February combined. Preliminary estimates for March 2011 show overnight arrivals remained rather consistent with the figures recorded in March 2010.

Airline Tourist Arrivals
Overnight tourist arrivals through the Phillip Goldson International Airport, Belizeís largest port of entry, increased by 2,123 visitors for the first quarter of 2011. That growth represents an overall increase of 3.8%. While every month this quarter shows an increase in tourism arrivals at the airport, January produced the largest growth spike at 11.7%. Positive growth is expected to continue throughout 2011, especially as Frontier Airlines may commence flights to Belize later in the year.

Cruise Tourist Arrivals
Due to cancellations from Carnival Cruise Lines, there was a 22% decrease in cruise passenger arrivals from January to March, as compared to the same time last year. However, this decrease is expected to be the offset by an increase in ship calls in the latter part of 2011 as new-to-Belize ships such as Crown Princess and the brand new Carnival Magic, to name a few, are expected to start making calls to Belize.

A 4% increase in global tourist arrivals was forecasted by the UNWTO for 2011. Belizeís overnight sector can expect to see a more modest growth, reaching somewhere between 2% to 3% this year. As the economic recovery continues in Belizeís primary target market and strategic outreach persists in other key countries, we can expect to see further increases in overnight arrivals throughout the rest of the year.

BTB discusses Action Plan with Stakeholders

Since the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) announced the hiring of Seleni Matus as Director of Tourism in February of 2010, there have been several changes. Not only does BTB have a new director, but there is also a new Director of Marketing Yanick Dalhouse. Long-standing BTB senior managers, such as 17-year veteran Shakira Oxley-Tsai, Lloyd Enriquez, Santiago Castillo Jr., and Stanley Longsworth Jr. were all let go. According to Matus, changes were inevitable if BTB was to move Belize forward.

On Saturday night, May 14, 2011, BTB and the Ministry of Tourism team gathered on the deck at the Holiday Hotel alongside a few tourism stakeholders for a meeting to discuss the changes, as well as update everyone on the decisions and progress within the 2010-2012 Action Plan. After a few brief words by Minister of Tourism Manuel Heredia Jr, wherein he acknowledged the hard work that has gone into preparing and applying the changes mentioned, Matus took to the stage to address the gathered crowd.

Upon her assignation to the Director's post, Matus and the BTB have undertaken a full internal review of its operations. BTB is about marketing, and with tourism being the top income-generator for Belize, BTB has had to step up its game. As such, with the consultation of international tourism experts and local stakeholders, a 2-year Action Plan was developed to meet tourism expectations. Ultimately, this Action Plan lays the groundwork for the Tourism Master Plan being developed by the Sustainable Tourism Program (STP) of the Ministry of Tourism and BTB.

BTB's Board of Directors is of the firm belief that despite the profound changes taking place, this is in fact the direction that must be taken to ensure success in Belize's tourism industry. Change was the key word in the presentation. In summarizing the Action Plan, Matus and her team highlighted the changes and priorities in BTB's marketing strategy, new programs in destination planning, quality assurance, and efficiencies in revenue collection, operations and finance systems.
