Mxico to invest $2 Billion to secure Belize and Guatemala bordersA state of emergency has been declared, travel advisories have been issued and regional beach volleyball championships have been postponed since the massacre in La Libertad, Petn over the weekend. We have been following the story because of the close proximity of Petn to western Belize and possible risks to locals travelling across the border by road. But the province also shares a border with Mexico, which today announced that it is investing two billion dollars to improve its security infrastructure and technology at its borders with both Belize and Guatemala. The upgrades are intended to keep illegal immigrants, goods, drugs and weapons from being smuggled into Mexico. The Interior Minister, Jos Francisco Blake Mora, says that the Mexican government will collaborate with Guatemala in the fight against criminal gangs as well as to find the persons responsible for the recent murder of twenty-eight persons at Los Cocos farm in Petn.
