With convention season in full swing, the machineries of the political parties revved up in the Orange Walk South, Belmopan and Toledo East constituencies over the weekend. In the north, Rosendo "Chendo" Urbina, the sitting Ambassador of Belize to Mexico, who previously ran but lost in Orange Walk Central, garnered one thousand and fifty votes, knocking currently elected area representative Marco Pech out of his place as UDP standard bearer. Pech received nine hundred and ninety-one votes. Dr. Ricardo Fabro, the former chair of the KHMH board, also contested the Orange Walk South convention, but only received a minimal one hundred and forty-one votes. Meanwhile, Doctor Amin Hegar, a former representative from Cayo West, moved over to the Belmopan area where three other contenders were contesting that seat for the opposition party. It was a hard fought convention, but in the end, Hegar topped the polls with eight hundred and forty-seven votes. He beat senator and attorney Lisa Shoman, who received five hundred and eighty-one votes; Maureen Leslie who got two hundred and thirty-five; and John Wade who garnered a hundred and thirty-two. Down support UDP supporters gathered in Punta Gorda for the endorsement of Peter Eden Martinez as Toledo East Standard Bearer.
