Are there any real safety concerns in San Pedro? We are staying in town at the Blue Tang this month. I am interested in seeing Mayan sights and sailing. What are the safest ways to do that? Thanks for your help.

The only real safety concern is to many drinks and falling off the bar stools.

Reality is only an illusion that occurs due to a lack of alcohol

Check with the front desk of your hotel. They will guide you to tour companies who are licensed, and will book the tours for you if you want.

In addition, just exercise the same caution that you would anywhere. Don't walk around late at night with a wad of cash in your pocket, and don't be naive enough to let anyone know where you are staying. Most of the crime on the island is petty thievery, and usually because someone knows what you have. Keep your cash, Iphones and computers in your room. If you are out late, take a taxi to your hotel.

And there is always the falling off your barstool!!

Use the hotel safe if they offer one for your valuables.
Don't walk the beach alone at night. Blue Tang is very close to town so you should be OK but I would take a taxi or walk on the roads at night like the locals do.

We just stayed at the Blue Tang a couple of weeks ago and loved it. Never once felt unsafe in any way and we walked at all hours of the night. We used the same common sense precautions that we would use in any town whether it was NYC, London or San Pedro. Blue Tang is a beautiful, clean and friendly hotel with a great staff.

I stay next door to the Blue Tang and walk the seawall and the beach all hours of the day and night with very little concern. As others have said just don't be an idiot and you'll be fine.
