BELMOPAN TO GET NEW MARKET
July 05, 2011

The Belmopan City Council has received a grant for the construction of a new market.

Marion Ali reporting....
"The Belmopan City Hall has received a $2.2 million grant from the European Union for the construction of a new farmers market. Belmopan Mayor Simeon Lopez says that purpose of the market is to replace the temporary market days for the vendors.

Mayor Simeon Lopez
"On Tuesdays and Fridays we have market day in Belmopan where the vendors bring in their produce from different areas around Belmopan and around the country. For some years that has been going on, using up our parking lot and they also have their produce on the ground. With the assistance of the EU we have gotten some grant funding to build a new market for these people so they can move out of that area and provide us with more parking spaces. This new facility will also afford them the opportunity to stay there daily if they want to because that is the purpose of that market."

The consultant Demo Consulting Architect and engineers from San Ignacio town is working on the design of the market that will be located in the Devon beaton Park in the Mountain View area of Belmopan.
